Did you remember to hold the sign backwards, face the wrong direction, do the exact opposite of the guy on the other side of traffic?

Thank you so much for this article! I am a flagger and lately I have been working 9 1/2 hour days out in the heat with a very odd tan line. It's nice to have someone else explain it to everyone. Some people really just don't understand how important and draining it really is. I too have things I would like to be doing than holding those people up in traffic. Unfortunately, I am not a fan of the male motorists who feel the need to whistle and gawk as I am trying to work. But I do love those people who stop by with a bottle of ice cold powerade or water, and especially the inspector who brings an ice cold cup of lemonade to me as the sun gets hotter. My summer job while in college was with PennDOT. I spent 1 summer as a flagman, and it was easily the worst job I ever had. Working on major highways there's things to look at, but it's hot as Hades. On back country roads, it's a bit cooler, but not much traffic. And the foremen wouldnt let girls do anything except hold the stupid stop slow sign. I got lucky the next summers and was assigned to the "Beautification Engineers"-we cut grass along median strips. And cutting grass with a gasoline mower all day was 100% better than flagging!!
