Abstinence only education might be unrealistic, but the alternative "Condoms = safe sex" education is dangerous. While quite effective against pregnancy and HIV when used properly, there are about 10 STD's that condoms do absolutely nothing against. This is what high schoolers need pounded into their heads.

Condoms won't save your son from STD's, Gil, so you might want to have another talk with him.

Of course, if you assume that the alternative is only "Condoms = safe sex" then you have not been paying attention. The alternative has been comprehensive sex education stressing abstinence but also providing information on safer sex techniques. Gil even said that abstinence is preferred and is the ONLY way of being sure to prevent unwanted pregnancy of the spread of an STD. However, he feels (and this is echoed by the research) that providing information beyond abstinence means that the son will be better prepared when the abstinence breaks down.

Condoms do nothing against the most common and painful incurable viral STDs.

HSV/HPV

Care to back up that claim with some citations? It has not been proven that condom use does "nothing" to prevent herpes infection. According to the CDC, consistent and correct use of latex condoms reduces the risk of genital herpes.

So those are two. One that you are mostly wrong about, and another that, while arguably the most common, is hardly considered the most painful. You said there are about 10. What are the others?

I was just a kid in the 90's, but I still remember "Have safe sex, use a condom!" and as a result kids believed condom == safe sex. A lot of people I talk to to this day think condoms protect them from everything, and even if they don't a shot will "clear it right up". Health class didn't stress the facts enough and it took an assembly with an outside speaker and multimedia to really drive it home. Condoms do nothing against the most common and painful incurable viral STDs.

The information changes as time goes by. (For that matter, so does the science regarding condoms which are better than they were back then.) These days, abstinence is primarily stressed but other methods like condoms are discussed as a secondary measure. It is promoted as "safer sex" as opposed to "safe sex". Not as good as abstinence but far better than nothing.

Why not let the Palin family be? Well...they do put themselve out there. Greta's not interviewing them at gunpoint!

I saw the interview over the weekend....Greta kept remarking how cute the baby was over and over ~~after a while she was digging so hard for something to say it made me uncomfortable watching. I thought for sure any moment one of them was gonna poke the baby real hard to wake up...to 'save the interview'.

And Mom Sarah had to enter the scene.......and she acted like she couldn't stay long but she sure got in a lot of words.

I love how she said she used words such as 'advocacy' describing her daughter.

She always talks like she is making a speech...why can't she just 'relax' like the 'down home people' she portends to be and speak from her heart and not the textbook in her head?
