As I said in another post 2 people from work left this morning to help. One is a nurse and one a respiratory therapist. Others are getting ready and will rotate with the ones down there.

News outlets close to the catastrophe seem to be using the term "evacuee," for whatever semantics are worth at a time like this.

I've been thinking about long-term relief when considering where to send my charity, since orgs like the Red Cross and the Salvation Army are likely being overwhelmed by their current cash flow. Here are two organizations that I think are worthy of your consideration. The first one is even based here in Lancaster County.

This is from www.missioncentral.com, located in Mechanicsburg:

1) “What is needed most” – “How can we help?” – “What can we do?”

Right now, we are asking everyone to focus on collecting Flood Bucket, Health Kit and School Kit items – the lists are available at missioncentral.com, click on “Information” and then select “UMCOR Kit Ingredients”. We are also collecting clothing (men's, women's, and children's clothing-all clothing must be new or in excellent condition - no men's suits, women's fancy dresses, evening wear, high heeled shoes, purses, and similar "dress-up items" for men, women or children. Underwear may be provided if new. From “Current Events” above – Health Kits are an immediate focus – please help as soon as you can!
If anyone wants to drop off these items and supplies for the kits to my house , I will take them to Mission Central in Mechanicsburg. There are directions on website for others. Please e-mail me at mcullen3212002@yahoo.com for more information.

Yes a terrible disaster; but I can't help but wander what were they thinking, building a city below sea level between two seas (Mississippi and the lake)? A city that even during the "dry" season has to pump water out continuously.

Animals need our help. They are victims of this Hurricane and seem to be ignored. There are thousands of injured and homeless animal victims. Please consider donating to the ASPCA, The Humane Society of the United States, or a veterinary group going to the hurricane area to try to help the animals. You can mark your donations to be used for this cause. Thank you.
