Our Mc-Consumption is the root of our current energy crisis, and I hate to say it, but the reason we are in Iraq.

To Quest1: I agree with you on the statement you made about reducing consumption. One way we can reduce consumption is by trying to bring back rail passenger service and more rail freight service. We are killing our countryside by building more and more highways when we should be spending money on rail service. Better rail freight service would also help get some of the long distance truck traffic of the road. As for our reason of being in iraq oil is only a small part it, if any.You need to read todays days article Reference Congressman Pitts on refineries and also my comment on it.

Mr. Pitts, If we would embark on a serious conservation effort in this country, not the kind of giveaway that the recent disgrace of an energy bill provided, we could be closing refineries. Also, we have only 4% of the total world oil reserves in the U.S. and we consume 26% of total world oil production; refining ain't the problem, consumption is. Park those trucks and SUV's folks; there is no other way.

I don't know why anyone "needs" a SUV or minivan. When I was a toddler, people got around just fine in cars ONLY. There were very few pickup trucks around. Now, pickups, SUVs and minivans are the scourge of the earth--literally. The safety argument doesn't fly. People just carry around too much crap in their vehicles. Unless you are hauling around Noah's ark and have a family of five or more, a standard car ought to be just fine. But, noooooooo. Everyone needs to have something better than the neighbor. Next time you feel the urge to moan and groan about gas prices, look at yourself in the mirror and yell at yourself! You are the cause of the problem!

To:JPmartin,MRmikemtr26 and others,
I don,t really think SUV's are the problem. Why you always want to bash the SUV drivers I dont know. What about the big giant mobile campers I see on the road?. They are far worse then the SUV's What about al the long distant trucks that are hailing freight that could be going by rail.
I really believe that our country has more then 4% of the worlds oil supply. We may only be supplying four precent for of the worlds oil consumption. You may want to check your facts on this.
We also I believe export oil to Japan.
What about all are caped wells, the Gulf of Mexico and the vast amount of oil in Alaska I guess that does not count. And any way, why should we use our oil if we can be using someone else's?
You liberals talk about resources. Families are getting smaller and were building bigger houses that need to be heated, need electric, need more material to build. Is that conervation? I think not. Thus more waist of engery and natural resources if you can have your big house I should be able to have my SUV if I desire.
Yes reducing consumption will lower the price it's the simple law of supply and demand. But corporate greed and the fact that the environmentalist won't let us drill in Alaska for oil or let us build new refineries and tap into the vast oil supply in Alaska are also to blame for the shortage and high prices. Let's be honest about this and call a spade a spade.
I know for some liberals it's hard to be honest and call a spade a spade but thats because you have no worth while agenda or the agena you offer is only a failed liberal agenda of the past. But sense you have no agenda that's why you can only critcize and name call further proving you have nothing to offer..
But don't get me wrong Liberals when your NON-SUV four wheel drive vehicle gets stuck in the snow this winter. I will still give you a ride home in my gas guzzling four wheel drive SUV to your not need over sized home I would be much happer giving you a ride home to smaller home which would indicate much more your concern for engery and resource concervation.
