unless the killer was in the house before the doors were locked or (the hypothetical security system was armed)
against better judgement here's some speculation. the killer was hiding out in the parents bedroom closet, everyone goes to sleep, the father was done in first, stabbed as he slept, then the mother as she was awakened. the son heard the commotion came to see what's up and got it in the hall with the dagger, the daughter was the last to awake, as stated the killer wasn't expecting four occupants and was on the way downstairs and/or out the door when the daughter spoke with the mother and fled to the neighbors.
I was in the neighborhood Thursday, and it seems fairly secluded, even being right along 501 and all things considered, doubtful that this was a random act. I'm sure motives like insurance and such were considered, without more information it's pretty tough guessin.
one would think that a blood trail would be found outside the premises leading to a get away vehicle or at least a direction of flight, after perpetrating such an act a vehicle would be the most convenient way out, I'm surprised that the daughter or neighbor didn't notice a vehicle leaving the scene. I doubt many vehicles were cruising the loop at that place and time.

Your speculation leads one to believe the assailant(s) was familiar with the family and interior of the house. If so, a security system would have been useless. No? Not saying one shouldn't have one though, considering todays world.

I'd wager a wad of money the murderer is well known by the family, he or she did it without premeditation and is on the younger side, probably less than thirty.

Geesh, I sound like some TV detective...Columbo maybe.

Edited to add: Sorry, Christopher, didn't see your post before I posted mine.

i know the neighborhood very very well. there is not much room for parking on the street.

i would be looking for someone within walking distance who left town and is not available to talk to police.

No problem, Woody.

Someone either on Talkback (on another thread) or on the WGAL website said there were tree-trimmers in the area behind the house a couple days afterwards, with the speculation they were looking for clues.

I don't know the area but judging from crime-scene photos of the house published online, it looks like a heavily-wooded area, lots of trees, foilage, etc.

Anyone remember the movie from about 20 years ago, "Manhunter", based on the Thomas Harris book "Red Dragon?" (also made into a movie, never saw it). Anyway, in Manhunter the killer scales up a tree in a wooded area behind the house of a suburban family to spy though windows and keep tabs on their comings-and-goings before entering the house one night after all have gone to bed and slaughters them all with a knife or sword. Very, very creepy. Starred William Peterson, now of "CSI" fame.

I'm sure this MT case probably isn't that dramatic, but when I read about the tree-trimmers...

Something keeps bugging me about this....... if a random burglar finds a house with the doors unlocked, wouldn't he grab what he could from the downstairs and get out of there as quickly and quietly as possible? Why would he even go to the upper level of the house and take the chance of waking someone up? If the bodies had been found downstairs I might believe that it was a foiled burglary, but GIVEN THE INFORMATION THUS FAR I believe that this was an intentional act that had nothing to do with burglary. What do the rest of you think?

You all have too much time on your hands and are watching too many crime shows. This crime was committed by someone they knew. I seriously doubt you have a mass murderer lurking about.
That being said, it still doesn't hurt to do the regular crime prevention stuff you should be doing anyway, like locking and closing garage doors, locking doors and windows at all times, trimming foliage, keeping outside lights lit, etc. And, don't open your door to strangers. Then sit down at your computer and speculate on the lastest who done it in Lancaster County.
I'm sure the police have several "persons of interest" they aren't speaking about yet.
