I don't understand- Why is a motorcycle taking a parking space wrong? Wouldn't the rider have taken that same space if in a car? Is there some code or law I don't know about?

I totally agree it's a photo op. But the free to those who are helping traffic matters (and afterall, the space is completely unused anyway) is newsworthy.

Yes, had that person driven his car, he would be taking the same space. From my perspective: if there are no motorcycle spaces availible, not a problem. When motorcyle spaces are availble, taking a car space is rude. Especially in this lot where car-sized spaces are fairly precious. Sticking your land yacht in a "compact cars only" space, where four feet stick out the front into the driving lane and you make an ajoining space unusable is also rude.
Not in this thread, but another, I mentioned that some tool at Lowes parked his truck across two spaces near the front of the lot and I had to resist sticking a shopping cart on both ends of his truck. You want to take up more space than you're socially alloted, go do it on the far end of the lot, don't inconvenience people for your own pompous reasons.
Oh, and I really love these things: gag parking tickets

The law actually states that a motorcycle or scooter is entitled to an entire parking space, same as a car. The same goes for the lane width. A scooter is a motorcycle is a car... They don't have to yield their parking space or lane to anyone. The only special part is that multiple motorcycles are allowed to share a space. But if there is any legal violation, all motorcycles are ticketed as if they were the sole occupant of the space.

In practice, a scooter just doesn't visually "fill" a space. So it seems like a waste of space. And it is. But downtown, where spaces are designated by lines or meters, we really don't have a choice if we want to comply with the law.

My bicycle and I were unceremoniously tossed out of the LNP garage one day last year. NO BIKES! the attendant hollered. I left a note at the front desk protesting. No response.
