What the Pupillometer can detect with amazing accuracy is the presence of illegal drugs, controlled substances and over-the-counter medication. The device is sensitive enough that it would detect if someone had smoked marijuana within the past 30 days, Geisler said.
Although impaired drivers need to be taken off the road, what's to stop some over zealous cop penalizing the guy who took over the counter meds for his allergies. I find this machine a potential to penalize innocent people and bog done the system.
And if over the counter meds impacts a person's ability to operate a vehicle safety, why shouldn't they be penalized? I don't understand this obsession with alcohol and illegal drugs that seems to blind our society. All of our social ills do not stem from drugs and alcohol.
Now its my time for the soapbox. When governments begin to serve only those in government or connected to it, the rest of society gets cheated. This forces government to deflect blame for the majorities situation by blaming some great evil. We went from alcohol to drugs and now terrorism. I am not touched by any of these things on a daily basis. What I am touched by on a daily basis is poorly maintained roads, a healthcare system that is out of control, and a never ending drain on my bank account from taxes. The true evil in our society is out of control taxes that create more power at all levels of government. The more money our politicians control, the more power they wield. The root cause of our woes is a government that is no longer maintaining an environment where hard, honest work is rewarded. They are playing a self serving role that they disguise with propaganda about the scary things we should fear. Stepping down.
Over 40,000 people died in motor vehicle crashes in 2005. The majority were not caused by drugs or alcohol. In fact 26,558 fatalities were not related to drugs or alcohol. Where's the concern for perventing these deaths or would it just be too inconvient for the rest of us to really care?
