How about the elementary school kids? I think there are significant safety issues that put them at risk. In addition to being a victem of acts of violance, kids risk exposure to pedephiles and potential abusers of all ilks of life. Also, those who must walk, even if accompanied by an adult, must brave extreme environmental conditions from time to time if they are to get their education. Is this reasonable or appropriate?

I just GOOGLED the distance from my house and the HS I used to attend and it was exactly 2 miles.

I walked it... ran it... everyday both ways in rain and snow. BOO HOO for the whimpy azz kids who can't do it today.

yes and besides the taxpayers in the city are getting a bargain for their money so why pay good money to bus those kids? what are the chances some kid could get snatched in a really nice place like lancaster city?

sure it's possible but we are talking about good money here.

By the way, GeezUs, when I was in school, I used to walk three miles each way, in the snow, rain, tornadoes, hurricanes, and blizzards, carrying the entire encyclopedia, up hill both ways. And that was during the war when I was in kindergarten..........

i used to ride my bike to school, 3 miles each direction.

i put a smaller tire on the front of the bike so it was down hill all the time. kids today don't think any more, at least like i used to.

When I went to Columbia High School, I used to ride my bike and park it at a friend's yard at the bottom of the HUGE hill and then walk up it.

Take a look at Columbia's long uphill climb that many children must walk everyday. No one in the Columbia School District is bussed that I am aware of.

Nope, still no bus service in Columbia - if you live in the Manor Street area you really have to hoof it. You either walk , have a car, or have your parents take you.

There were two kids killed on the High School hill that I know of over the years, walking to school being struck by speeding cars.
I know when I went in the early 80's, the RRTA would make one sweep up to CHS if you were lucky enough to catch it!

1.8 mile walk vs. Childhood Obesity --- which battle will we fight -- pick your side now
Completely invalid statement. My girls are bussed to and from school. Neither one of them are obese. The reasons are simple. They eat smart, do not eat a bunch of junk, are limited with the amount of TV that they watch, are both active, are encouraged to exercise, etc. We do many family activities.........hiking, camping, biking, and walking while finding letterboxes......these help keep them fit. So my kids walk about 18 steps to the bus stop AND are winning the battle........
