Positive American Celebrations

local farm fairs

parades with high school marching bands and floats

family reunion picnics [four to six hours yearly - not one to three days]
one negative - but expected

shopping this time of year and hearing musical displays from both halloween decor and Christmas decorations

Edited....Wow....the censor took the word, culture [it was capitalized], and made it profanity [I came back and deleted that word from the title]....I suppose it was the word cult embedded in culture. Maybe we should not have culture celebrations because they are profane?

Ausgezeichnet! Ich muss mal unsere Constitution auch auf Deutsch lesen.

Ich bin Deutsch-Americaner (Donauschwab) und hore taglich die "Schlaflos in Muenchen" podcast wahrend meine stunden lang spaziergang. Deswegen kann Ich immernoch gut Deutsch schreiben, lesen, and sprechen.

Auf Wiederschreiben!

Excellant! I must read our Constitution in German.

I am German-American and have listened to "Sleeples in ?" podcast while taking many long walks. That's why I can still write, read, and speak German well"????
My German is really rusty!! Am I anywhere close on this? Not sure about the "Auf Wiederschreiben"

You did pretty well. "Auf Wiederschreiben" is "until I write again", kind of like "Auf Wiedersehn" means "until I see you (sehen) again".

"What exactly is American culture? I thought this country was a melting pot of different cutures." twinmom.
America is a melting pot of cultures, but has none of it's own?
How about a popular ad slogan for an example. Baseball, apple pie, and Chevrolet. Not soccer, burritos, and Hyundai.
Twinmom, when folks start accepting as granted what you've said about our culture, the culture destroyers know their work is effective.

My question was based on my interpretation of Bobers post about no American culture celebrations. I wanted to know what he would feature at an "American Day Celebration". Of course there are American things like you mentioned, but what is wrong with celebrating other cultures as well? Why does one have to let go of their culture when they come here? Why can't they celebrate where they came from and still enjoy a ball game?
Thank you WW for the list. See Bober, American culture is celebrated, it's just not labeled as such. Incidentally, our annual family reunion does last 2 days.

twinmom
Well, twinmom, even as I wrote that....I considered that some people have relatives traveling a distance these days. Everyone in my family had been nearby until the last few years. Now we just go visiting.
I forgot about high school reunions.

Those seem as American cultural traditions, too. Come to think of it...my last high school reunion lasted two days because some people traveled a great distance to get here.
