If I remember correctly when we toured around Germany and cruised the Rhine we were told that the Rhine has less pollution than the Great Lakes.
The Great Lakes are some of the most polluted bodies of water in the United States. Cleaning up the environmental disaster that is the Great Lakes has recently been estimated at $50 billion. To put that into perspective, that's roughly 1/8 the current cost of the Iraq War.
Nobody in his right mind would say "our river is cleaner than the Great Lakes" in an effort to describe how clean his river is. That's like saying "my house is cleaner than a trash dump, and trash dumps are operated under strict environmental rules."
