Another thing that doesn't help the DSD is the vast amount of farmland within its boundaries. Much of this is taxed at pennies on the dollar. Couple that with a very minimal industrial/commercial taxbase and lots of housing developments and you get what we have now - darn near Lancaster City taxes and students stuffed in ever nook and crevice of the schools!!!

I guess my complaint is the taxes keep going up and yet it seems like the developments keep getting approved...some people seem to think they "bring in tax money" but unless it's a 55 and over community there's no way they can bring in as much money as is spent educating the children living in the development (and that's not even talking about OTHER services needed for extra residents).

Doesn't every school district do a yearly census? We get a form every year from ours, and it asks you to list each minor in your home and the school and grade they anticipate attending the following year.

A few years ago I had talked with three of the school board members about this same subject. I expressed to them that the school was in for a major growth change. All three of them just laughed at me and said that Donegal was only going to grow 1.3 % over the next 10 years. I expressed to each one of them that they need to just take a drive around the Maytown, Marietta and Mount Joy areas and count the new house ( singles, Townhomes and duplexes) that were being constructed. They didn't want to listen then,, and I am sure they will not listen now. They get what they get and we will have to live with it.

So, what are you going to do about it? Keep in mind, these people are not appointed for life. In my opinion, if you have elected officials that are apathetic to the people that elected them, then you need to think long and hard as to whether they should be reelected.......

The sad part is that someone has to fix up the screw ups of past administrations. Those of us in the DSD got to experience that first-hand when we endured double-digit increases year after year because previous administrations refused to raise taxes.

I certainly hope that there is some communication between the DSD and local municipalities regarding growth and development. Since one relies so heavily on the other for funding, it would only seem to make sense. Then again, what makes sense doesn't always happen!
