A Lebanon man walking along Route 230 in Mount Joy Township was struck by a truck and killed early this morning.
Another serious traffic accident — one involving three vehicles and entrapment — happened at 8:47 a.m. today in Brecknock Township.
Northwest Regional Police responding to the 2:30 a.m. "pedestrian struck" call just west of Mount Joy Borough found Daniel J. Fieni, 24, on the roadway and unresponsive, Northwest Chief Sam Gatchell said today.
Fieni was pronounced dead at the scene by a Lancaster County deputy coroner.
Gatchell said a commercial truck traveling in the westbound lane struck the victim in the 1400 block of West Main Street near Snyder Road.
Fieni "was apparently walking in a traffic lane in dark clothing and it's not well-lit there," Gatchell said. "It's a rural area."
Police will make a detailed inspection of the commercial truck to see if it is in proper running order, but Gatchell said the initial investigation of gives "no indication of anything astray."
The chief declined to name the driver or give any other information about the truck. He also did not give any information about why Fieni was walking in the area.
Northwest Regional Police Officer Ken Henry is the lead investigator for the incident. He is being assisted by the Northwest Crash Team, a special team of officers from various northwestern county police departments.
Anyone with information relating to the crash is asked to contact police at 367-3382.
The three-vehicle accident with entrapment occurred at the intersection of Route 897 and Willow Street in Brecknock Township, south of Adamstown near Shupp's Grove outdoor antique market.
A county dispatch supervisor said she was unsure of the total number of injured people. At least one person was taken to a hospital, and a rescue vehicle was still on the scene shortly after 10 a.m., she said.
The initial report was that a dump truck, van and automobile were involved.
The incident is being handled by Ephrata state police, who said they could not provide any information on the accident by press time.
