This isn't at all what I expected to read from Mr. Dreyfuss when I opened the article. What a breath of fresh air.
The comments on civility stood out to me because my wife taught civics at a homeschool co-op which included a mock election. Some parents were very concerned that the competition in the mock election would ruin friendships among the kids. When the election was held and one person won the seat the kids were just fine and came away with and understanding of democracy all the way down to the level of roles in political campaigns.
Civility is something we can develop and practice on this discussion board as well. Having idealogical differences with another feeling without ill will toward them.

Did she teach civics or civility?

Dreyfuss on Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
You saw a cut from "Mr. Smith goes to Washington." I'm going to tell you a quick story.

When the Germans came into Paris, they told theParisian theater owners, you have one week to show any films you want and then we take over. They all showed "Mr. Smith goes to Washington."

That's because Jerry Lewis wasn't making movies yet.

(I was at the speech and heard it first hand) I agreed with much of what Mr.Dreyus said, and (former Rep,.) Bob Walker (whose voice and personality were equally star-like)

Uhhh wasn't Bob Walker along with Newt Gingrich and a few others the ones who started the bombthrowing when Reagan was elected?

I recall civility was the norm up until Newt came on the scene with the Reagan era and then all of a sudden anyone who was against Reagan was un- American.

Walker was part of that crowd. For him to lecture anyone about civility is laughable.

It just shows how little people know about our own recent history.

Bober it has nothing to do with the ACLU and political correctness. Stop using that as the excuse. The problem is they pass these stupid laws(No Child Left Behind), mandating testing and tieing that to funding. So in order to get the money they have to teach for the tests, which are math and english. So all the other subjects don't get taught to nearly the level they could be. Talk to any teacher and they will tell you the same thing. They are still required by law to teach the other subjects, they just dont' have the time to do everything as much as they should. It has nothing to the ACLU.

But I'd bet you amillion that if they required this to be taught in public schools, there would be all kinds of flack from the forgieners legal and illegal and that the ACLU would surely get involved. MARK MY WORD.. well I don't think we have to wrry about it ever happening no one in polotics in this country has the balls to make it happen.

Did you even read my post? THey are required to teach social studies in school. Civics get lumped into that whole subject. Keep spouting of your nonsense that has nothing to do with the topic at hand The ACLU wouldn't need to get involved. Your just looking for someone else to blame. That seems to be what you do best. blame everyone else for your problems and shortcomings. Kinda sad really.. Yeah all the forgieneers would be so upset about it. Whatever you say bud. All this from the guy that was never bright enough to get out of Cabbage Hill. For all your future predictions you seem to like to make, you really messed up on that one bud.

One could say she taught both.
