While the Manheim Township High School girls lacrosse team was at practice on Monday afternoon, some male students were busy going through the girls' book bags.

The practice session was in the Middle School gym, and the book bags were left unattended in a school hallway, police said.

Just before 5 p.m. Monday, a school custodian spotted three male juveniles going through the bags, police said.

The custodian chased the boys out of the school. They were not apprehended, but two teachers saw what was happening and they were able to identify the fleeing youths, police said.

Police said 10 girls on the lacrosse team found that $2,445 worth of items were missing from their book bags. The stolen items included eight cell phones, a pair of diamond earrings, and an iPod.

Police said charges are pending as the investigation continues.

This was the third theft incident within a week at township schools.

Last week, two Manheim Township High School students had items stolen from their backpacks in the high school building.

A 15-year-old girl had a $340 iPod stolen on Wednesday, and a 17-year-old boy had a $400 iPhone stolen on Thursday, police said.
