Police have identified the body found floating in the Susquehanna River near Three Mile Island Thursday.

An autopsy Friday determined that Gregory Stone, 49, drowned sometime this week in the river, Susquehanna Regional Police Lt. Stephen Englert said.

Englert did not release an address for Stone, but said the man most likely lived in Dauphin County.

Two fishermen found Stone's clothed body in shallow water near the shore at about 6 p.m. Thursday just south of the bridge that connects Route 441 to Three Mile Island at Conewago Creek, Englert said.

Englert said that police are continuing to investigate Stone's death and haven't ruled out foul play.

"At this point, we are looking at all aspects of this and haven't made a decision one way or another," Englert said.

On Thursday, a team of Bainbridge Fire Company volunteers wearing wetsuits waded into the river, placed the body in a floating basket and carried it to shore.

Police know of no boats in the vicinity that had capsized, nor have they located a vehicle in the area that might have belonged to the man.

No fishing equipment was found near the body, and Englert was not wearing a fishing vest or waders, according to published reports.

The area where Englert's body was discovered, in Conoy Township near the Lancaster County line, is near the spot where the body of Sara Yorty, 30, of Springettsbury Township, York County, was found March 18. Yorty died of a broken pelvis and exposure. Her family believes she fell while on a hike.

Farther downriver, the body of Robert L. Buckwalter 50, of Water Street Rescue Mission, was found Jan. 10 on the Manor Township shoreline just north of Safe Harbor Dam.

An autopsy revealed Buckwalter's cause of death, like Stone's, was freshwater drowning.
