Four people, including three occupants of a horse-drawn buggy, were seriously injured in crashes Monday in East Lampeter Township and Martic Township.

Christ Beiler, 19, of Ivy Road, Paradise, was operating a buggy that collided with a Dodge Durango truck at 6:50 p.m. at Mount Sidney Road and Stumptown Road, East Lampeter police said,.

Beiler and two passengers, Mattie Beiler, 25, and Barbara Smucker, 23, both of Paradise, were thrown onto a lawn. Ambulances took all three to Lancaster General Hospital, where they were admitted in either critical or serious condition.

This morning, Smucker was still in critical condition. Christ Beiler was in serious condition and Mattie Beiler was in fair condition, an LGH spokesman said.

Robert Anderson, 41, of the 5400 block of Old Philadelphia Pike, Kinzers, who was driving the Durango, was not injured, police said.

Beiler was operating the open-top buggy south on Mount Sidney Road. He turned left at Stumptown Road and into the path of the northbound truck, police said.

The horse broke free from the buggy. It was found about three quarters of a mile from the crash scene.

Richard Drumm, 80, of Holtwood, was hurt in a one-vehicle crash at 2:45 p.m. Monday on Hilldale Road, near the village of Mount Nebo in Martic Township, Lancaster state police said.

Drumm was driving a 1992 Toyota pickup truck south on Hilldale Road. He lost control after traveling down a steep hill and around a sharp left curve, just south of Brady's Hill Road, Trooper Donna Harrison reported.

The truck traveled across a lawn, struck a utility pole, and then struck several shrubs and more trees over a distance of 190 feet, Harrison said.

Drumm was listed in critical condition this morning at Lancaster General.

In other accidents:

• Gladys Dulaney of Duncansville, Blair County, and two passengers in her vehicle were hurt in a Friday morning crash on westbound Route 30, near the New Holland Pike exit, Manheim Township police said.

A vehicle operated by Corinne Betancourt, of Lancaster, struck the back of Dulaney's vehicle at 8:58 a.m., Officer Sam Echternach reported.

Police cited Betancourt for failure to drive at a safe speed.

• Todd M Snavely, 43, of Mechanic Street, Reinholds, was taken to Reading Hospital following a 9:17 p.m. crash Friday in the 100 block of Swamp Church Road in West Cocalico Township.

Snavely's vehicle left the road and struck a culvert and a utility pole, East Cocalico Township police said.

• Joseph S. Tyl, 55, of Reading, was taken to Lancaster General after his 1996 Volkswagen struck a cement culvert and a utility pole at 12:25 a.m. Friday in the 800 block of Rothsville Road, Warwick Township police said.

Police are awaiting the result of blood-alcohol tests before determining charges.

• A vehicle driven by Matthew Miller, 32, of Hill Road, Denver, struck a utility pole in the first block of North Line Road in East Cocalico Township shortly before 11:30 p.m. Saturday, township police said.

Miller is being charged with fleeing-eluding police and multiple traffic violations, police said.

What you need to realize is that a restraint system WOULD NOT WORK in the current buggies. They are made mostly from wood and we all know what happens to wood when hit. So in other words we would have people still flying out but with seat belts around them. I am not Amish but I do have some close family that is. I take every chance I have to talk to them about the driving.

Lets face it they will not be going away. It is going to be a fact of life in Lanco. What we need to do is be aware of them and use caution. Also as I said there is some education needed for them as well.

One more thing before I end this. If we really wanted to I think we could all put a list together of people that are not fit to be on the road.

The key here is to EDUCATE those that are a hazard not just remove them!

PS- One more thing. What is the diff between those in buggies or those on cycles? Both are unrestrained. Both of them make the choice to be there. And both of them require us to use caution around them.

What YOU need to ralize is that if something is not/will not work then changes need to be made so that a restraint system will work. How many people have to be injured or killed before someone steps up to take the intiative to get changes made?? Education will only go only so far and I am certainly not implying the Amish/Mennonites need to go away. What I am saying is that more needs to be done to protect them and if that means changing the designs/construction of the buggies then so be it. I saw comments on here about "personal responisibility", well that goes BOTH ways. We, the car drivers needs to be aware and use caution but the Amish/Mennonites also need to do their part too. As for bike riders, I am cautious around them too but also am an advocate for protective gear being worn anytime they are on the roads!!!!

Change? How dare you swear like that on a public forum. Think of the people riding in buggies as pedestrians and they'll be safe around you.

Aww, that's nice that they came to visit. We have a busdriver my kids just love, too. He hands out candy now and then and looks--in my son's estimation, anyway--like Jerry Garcia. And then there's the afternoon lady, who should be driving a broom instead of a bus...

Jerry Garcia driving the bus? What a long strange trip that must be.
Anyway, I thought Neil Cassidy was the driver...

I have 5 boxes of candy I just bought to hand out when I get back. Snickers, Milkyways, 3 Musketeers, and plain old Hershey's Choc. bar. Milkyways usually win hands down!

Me, I'm a Snickers kind of gal. So....what route am I looking for again?

I see Babblu's point. Even if she did her part, there's still some jacka$$e$ out there that would use less caution; I see those drivers using less caution when I'm in my car with my children and it makes me nervous for our safety. I believe the amish & Old Order Mennonites should be able to live as they wish, but I also think there's merit to adopting restraint systems if they can be designed appropriately.

Thankfully, Neil isn't driving my kids' bus. Although my son has read the book and would probably find that cool, he's one of those invincible-only- in-their-own-minds 14-year-olds with poor judgment.
