A Reading-based printing company has acquired its second family-owned Lancaster County printing firm in the past three months.

Standard Offset Printing has purchased Veitch Printing Corp. and Veitch Digital Partners, which operate a printing plant at 1740 Hempstead Road.

The terms of the deal, which was finalized Friday, were not disclosed.

Standard Offset in February acquired Acorn Press of Manheim Township. In 1996, the company also purchased Calloway Network, an East Hempfield mailing and fulfillment firm.

The latest acquisition creates a company with the potential for annual sales of $25 million to $30 million, said Thomas Veitch, former president of Veitch Printing.

As part of the acquisition, Veitch is now president of digital services for Standard Offset/Veitch Printing, the temporary name of the expanded firm.

Scott Vaughn is president of the company, and Scott Reigert, former president of Acorn Press, has been named president of offset printing, Veitch said.

Neither Vaughn nor Charlotte Cooper, owner of Standard Offset, could be reached for comment on the acquisition.

Standard Offset approached Veitch about selling the company back in January, he said.

The Veitch family decided to sell so the firm would remain competitive in a difficult market.

Veitch has expanded its digital printing and communication capabilities, adding Web-to-print services that use the Internet to target customers with print materials.

Thomas Veitch boasts that the company has three Hewlett-Packard 5500 Indigo printers, the second-largest digital installation in central Pennsylvania.

Those printers, along with a traditional printing press, will likely be relocated to the Acorn facility next month, he said.

Operations are being phased out at Veitch's 35,000-square-foot Hempstead Road plant, which the family may sell by the end of the year.

Veitch Printing was established in 1975, when Boyer and Samuel Veitch bought the company from Vernon Martin, who started the firm in 1964.

A full-service commercial printer, Veitch specializes in high-end, four-color work, such as annual reports, product catalogs and college viewbooks.

It serves customers in eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and the New York City area.

Prior to its acquisition, Veitch had about $7 million in annual sales.
