During a routine speed check, Manheim Township police arrested a fugitive from North Carolina who was living in Lancaster County.
Robert J. Hughes, 28, of 138 S. Wolf St., Manheim, was charged Wednesday with receiving stolen property, police said.
Officers conducted a morning speed check in the 6300 block of Main Street in East Petersburg as part of the Buckle Up PA program.
Police said they stopped a 2006 GMC pickup truck that appeared to be speeding at 11:55 a.m. They said they determined the vehicle had been stolen from a car lot in Wilmington, N.C., in February.
The Florida license plate on the vehicle also was found to have been stolen from South Wilmington, N.C., in February, police said.
Manheim Township police Sgt. Tom Rudzinski said Hughes had test-driven the truck in February, made a copy of the key and later returned to steal the vehicle from the lot.
Rudzinski said Hughes had moved to Manheim a few months ago.
Police also determined Hughes was wanted by the North Carolina Department of Corrections on a probation violation.
Hughes was arraigned before Magisterial Judge David Brian and committed to Lancaster County Prison in lieu of $75,000 bail for two counts of receiving stolen property and $80,000 bail for the fugitive from justice charge.
Twenty-three motorists also were cited for speeding in the 25 mph zone during Wednesday's speed check. The highest recorded speed was 47 mph.
