Who says there's nothing to do in downtown Lancaster on a Sunday?
Building Character, a downtown Lancaster antique gallery, will host the Sunday Swap flea market from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
"This was born out of the need for a little culture and activity on Sunday," said Tony Nies, who opened the gallery with Marty Hulse in October. The shop specializes in architectural salvage, antiques and art.
"When people hear flea market, they might think (of) grandma's dusty old stuff," Hulse said. "But this is more than that."
Building Character already has 20 vendors signed up for Sunday's event. They will sell antiques with everyone in mind, from comic-book collectors to those looking for antique doorknobs.
"There's character in this stuff that you can't buy from Home Depot," Nies said.
Vendors will sell furniture, music records, china, glassware, signs, collectible toys and more. Food will be provided by Jim Myers of Characters Pub, Christina Paveris of Nick's Pizza, and pastry chef Eric Moshier.
Building Character hopes to make Sunday Swap a weekly event on historic Queen Street.
"We want to create some culture," Nies said. The gallery already has hosted artist chats, book signings and movie screenings. Its off-beat location gives it the artsy, underground vibe Nies and Hulse sought to create.
Building Character, at 342 N. Queen St., is housed in a circa-1900 garage designed by famed Lancaster architect C. Emlen Urban. The former Lancaster County Storage Co. warehouse is in an alley next to Onion's Cafe, just off North Queen Street.
There are still open vendor spots for Sunday Swap. There is a $20 fee per space, and vendors must provide their own tables. It is requested that vendors confirm attendance by calling 394-7201.
