Mussel man comes to Lititz library

Lititz Record Express nature columnist Al Spoo will discuss and sign his new book, "The Pearly Mussels of Pennsylvania," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, at Lititz Public Library.

According to a description on Amazon.com, "Each of the sixty-six species of freshwater mussels from Pennsylvania waters (including extant and extirpated species) is described and illustrated by the author. Al Spoo provides multiple views for each species on full-color plates and offers keys for distinguishing them. Freshwater mussels are a rapidly disappearing resource, and this book offers a detailed look at these fascinating natural treasures."

The book, published by Coachwhip Publications and priced at $59.95, contains 210 pages, 79 colored plates and 533 illustrations.

To register for the free program, call 626-2255 or visit www.lititzlibrary.org.

Book is a winner
"He Said Yes: The Story of Father Mychal Judge," written by Landisville author Kelly Ann Lynch and illustrated by former Lancaster resident M. Scott Oatman, received first place in the Children's Books category of the 2008 Catholic Press Association Book Awards.

The book, previously reviewed on this page, tells the story of the Franciscan priest and New York City Fire Department chaplain who died Sept. 11, 2001, ministering during the attack on the World Trade Center.

"The text itself, gentle yet strong, truly conveys the character of Father Mychal and his love for the Lord" and "The illustrations represent the text in a wonderful way ... painting a picture of Fr. Mychal's heart and soul," said the June issue of The Catholic Journalist in reporting the news.

Looking for tome on Carrie's nightstand?

The Associated Press issued a consumer alert for the millions who have seen the "Sex and the City" movie: There is no such book as "Love Letters of Great Men," which Carrie Bradshaw reads while in bed with Mr. Big.

The closest text in the real world apparently is "Love Letters of Great Men and Women: From the Eighteenth Century to the Present Day," compiled by C.H. Charles and first released in the 1920s and reissued last year by Kessinger Publishing.

Richard Davies, of AbeBooks.com, an online seller that features used titles, told AP last week that he received hundreds of queries about the book. Enough readers have been directed to the Kessinger anthology that it ranked No. 178 on Amazon.com Friday.

A scene in the movie shows Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) poring over the imaginary collection, although citing real letters by Beethoven and Napoleon among others. Big (Chris Noth) later takes passages from the book as he expresses his love, by e-mail, to Carrie.
