Forgive me, but I don't understand why those of you that are from other school districts are so up in arms about this. It's not your district, so why do you care? It's certainly nothing for the good residents of Manheim Township or Lancaster Township or others to get angry about or certainly insult us. ("religiousites"?)
I am happy to be a part of ELANCO (for all my life) and am happy that at least someone will stand up to the corruption that comes out of Harrisburg. I remember when that form came out to ask for an exemption and I remember that I didn't read it, but passed it on to my husband. I saw those words tax relief and money back thought it would be a great thing so why not? I'm too impatient to wade through technical government stuff like that. I wonder how many of the 72% actually read it, or if they may have just sent it back without really understanding what they were asking for. I'm certainly not saying that my fellow neighbors are idiots, but sometimes we see that we can get some money back and jump on it without really "reading the fine print".
Times are difficult for everyone but isn't there problem when we are almost promoting gambling to save some money on our taxes? Maybe instead of using that money for gambling with slot machines and lottery tickets, people should use that money to pay their bills and gas and other expenses. I had a grandmother that I loved dearly (now departed) who lived on welfare and food stamps yet spent her money on bingo and lottery tickets. I can't help but wonder if she had kept that money, would she have been able to have a place of her own rather than living with various relatives because she couldn't afford it.
If there is going to be a referendum on the upcoming ballot, people need to make sure they get out and actually vote. There always seems to be a large percentage of people that want to complain and criticize how things are done but don't take the time to vote.

I'm happy, you're happy, BUT . . . you can choose not to take the money YOURSELF. Truly, if I felt that strongly about it, I would take the money and donate it to a worthy cause.
I DO live in Eastern Lancaster County School District, and I DID read the form I signed and sent back. I learned in school not to sign anything that I didn't read. I think you need to give those 73% of people a bit more credit!!

Bump.
For anyone opposed to the school board's recent actions. There is currently a petition circulating throughout the Elanco school district demanding that the current school board resign due to having "abandoned all fiduciary responsibility to the citizens of the district". If you are interested in signing this petition and are an Elanco taxpayer, then ask around or come early to the school board meeting on Monday July 21st at 7pm.
Something to ponder:

Every member of the school board applied for the homestead act -- What suddenly made most of them change their minds about Act I?

The special meeting called to vote on Act I may not have been legal -- it was only advertised on the school district website and not in local newspapers.

Although the amount of tax rebate is only $67 this year, in future years that number could increase and be much more significant to individual households.

We are a Title I school district, meaning that many of our taxpayers are living at or near poverty level.

Our district currently accepts tax money from bars, gun dealers, tobacco farmers. Why pick and chose on gambling?

One year after voting to close Caernarvon Elementary school and stating that they would mothball it for future use, this same school board has voted to tear down the school (estimate cost to be $275,000)and sell the land. Why not just sell the property "as is"? There are at least 2 interested parties in purchasing the school building, but not a vacant lot. Why pay money to tear it down? Does someone on the school board have a developer relative who wants the lot vacant?

Common belief among area leading Republicans is that Chuck Trupe is behind the current rejection of Act I and that he has some political agenda that he is running at the expense of the taxpayers.
See you at the school board meeting!

I am soooooooooooo proud of my school board for standing up and doing the right thing. It's about time ELANCO showed what this part of the county is made of.
BRAVOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

... representing the majority (73%) who want tax relief.

Where's this percent come from? I didn't see any sources cited.
QUOTE(easydoesit @ Jul 2 2008, 09:44 AM)
As a taxpaying resident, I would be irate! What gives Martin and Trupe the right to use their moral issues to decide how I will spend my money???

The taxpayers/voters that elected them; so you did.

I am an Elanco taxpaying resident . . . . and I am irate!!! I'm not sure what they think they are accomplishing. 73% of the people in the school district wanted the money.

I understand your irate'ness.
I do, however, take issue with the 73% number. It has not had any references cited, and those references will need to also validate if the people that opted in did so knowing the issue behind the money.
I've seen people that are as oposed to the money as you are supportive that opted in unknowingly. Granted, shame on them, but the point stands.
QUOTE(tired7 @ Jul 2 2008, 01:24 PM)
Brilliant! I'm so happy that you made the CHOICE to send your $66 back anyway. However, myself, and apparently 73% of all Elanco residents made the choice to take the $66.

School Board Members are supposed to represent the public . . . 73% is a pretty good majority. I guess they forgot to read that portion of the "I want to be a public servant" handbook.

Same point as above.
QUOTE(russ257 @ Jul 2 2008, 03:10 PM)
Glad I dont live there. It's not like rejecting this money is going to do anythign for the community. Pennsylvania will still have casinos. leaving 400,000 dollars on the table is just plain stupid. Well I would say that the people should speak with their votes next time elections roll around. I doubt this school board will be re-elected.

Change happens when one individual stands up and makes it happen. Saying you can't make a difference does indeed mean you won't make a difference, and that's a shame.
QUOTE(easydoesit @ Jul 2 2008, 03:24 PM)
Now you're talking! Speak with your vote!!!
Exactly!!

This same board will then want to cut costs in the budget, saying they don't want to impose a tax increase on the residents. Apparently they have no problem with asking residents to pay more than they could in taxes if they don't like where the money is coming from.

This district needs some sensible people to run for the school board!

This is the correct response, though I'd personally be surprised if they're all replaced. They have been re-elected a few times already.
QUOTE(Jimmy St. Plum @ Jul 2 2008, 11:48 PM)
AHHH HA HA HA HA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

These backwards, silly, religiousites prove once AGAIN what a bunch of dunderheads they truly are! YOU LOSE, ELANCO!!!! HA HA HA HA HAAAAAAAA!

Wait, who voted for them?
QUOTE(easydoesit @ Jul 3 2008, 09:31 AM)

The ELANCO board is under the control of Chuck Trupe, who homeschools his kids and doesn't want to pay any taxes. So he strips the budget of anything he can make an argument for, and the other board members fall in behind him because, guess what, he's the head of the local Republican Committee!! Everyone else is too scared to buck the system because he has the power.

Do the taxpayers realize that their district is being run by a guy who doesn't even use the school to educate his own kids?

My brother and I were home schooled for kindergarten only, about 20 years ago.
But way to double check your facts.
QUOTE(tired7 @ Jul 3 2008, 04:23 PM)
Nope . . .didn't know that Chuck Trupe homeschooled his kids or that he was a GOP committeeman. Well, well . . . the things you learn on comment boards! That just infuriates me! We have a school board member who won't send his kids to the school? If that is indeed true . . . . . . . SOMEONE needs to get him out of there. How is it honorable to be a school board member and pass policy that affects children, when he doesn't seem to think the system serves HIM well enough. I hope some folks from the actual Elanco district get going on this . . I know it has lit a fire for me.

The amount of misinformation is astounding.
Please double check your facts people, and be critical of new information.
Every student not in public school is keeping YOUR taxes down.
Would you like to increase your taxes by $800+ so you're in line with the surrounding districts?
