A late-weekend guest, unwanted by most people, stayed a little longer than expected on Sunday.

And even with the cleanup from the visit finished, the after-effects are still being felt for a little while.

The guest was a powerful storm that came through over the dinner hour Sunday, dumping more than an inch of rain across Lancaster County.

Expected to pop in and pop out, the rain then lingered most of Sunday night.

There was some high water and a few downed trees — and one police computer system got taken out by lightning — but there were no major problems, emergency dispatchers said this morning.

As the new work week gets started, today "we're going to struggle to get into the mid-80s" as the clouds continue to linger, a forecaster said this morning.

"After that, for the rest of the week, we should be getting 2, 3 degrees warmer each day," and Tuesday and Wednesday should feel more summer-like, added Millersville University student meteorologist Matt Potter.

The signs of the unwanted "guest" should keep decreasing through the day, forecasters said.

Tonight should be cooler, with some patchy fog developing and a more comfortable overnight low into the lower 60s.

Then, Tuesday and Wednesday should feel more like summer, with sunny skies and a high into the mid-80s Tuesday and then the upper 80s Wednesday.

But thoughts of summer sun seemed a long way away late Sunday afternoon.

After a mostly sunny day, the skies quickly turned dark and then opened up, blanketing the county with wet stuff.

There were scattered reports of high water and a few downed trees, but no major problems were reported, county emergency dispatchers said today.

Lightning did knock out the computers at Northwest Regional Police Department, but calls were still being received and the strike was having no effect on public safety, officials there said.

The Lancaster Barnstormers had a two-hour rain delay at the start of their game Sunday night, and a planned fireworks display afterward had to be canceled due to the late hour.

Now would be an opportune time to remind everyone to get rid of any standing water they may find. This weather is prime conditions for mosquito population explosion. I noticed the bugs were out in force last night and their presences is sure to increase significantly in the next few days.
I am sure that you realize that your free ranging chickens eat lots of bugs. I was told by a friend that has chickens that they also eat ticks. That is another plus.....

Yeah the ticks are under control,. I save a boat load on feed expenses by free ranging, provided the hawk family stops their terrorism against my defenseless flock. The ''death from above'' hinders my egg production, and the survival rate of my chicks plummet.
Too bad these chickens don't eat mosquitos, I think bats might though, I ought construct some bat houses if that is the case.

We have been only letting ours free range when we are home. They have become too curious, and end up leaving our yard and head up the row. We have been fortunate on the hawk issues, although we have seen a fox from time to time out in the fields behind our home. We usually have the dog out with the chickens. This will hopefully protect them if any foxes decide to visit......

I don't have time to dig through the crappy LOL archives, but one of the puff pieces about the convention center and crane safety mention that the crane is intentionally allowed to swivel when not in use.

This supposedly reduces the strain put on the support tower and framework.

Thanks Floyd. A construction worker told me the same thing today while I was working at market.
