Two sport-utility vehicles fell off a trailer on a Route 30 exit ramp at Centerville Road Wednesday afternoon, and one of them rolled into the path of an oncoming vehicle, East Hempfield Township police said.
The 2:14 p.m. crash caused one minor injury and closed the ramp for about 90 minutes, police said.
Township police Officer A. J. Lombardo gave this account:
Walter James Munn, 39, of Capitol Heights, Md., near Washington, was driving a large Dodge Ram pickup truck east on Route 30. He was heading to the Manheim Auto Auction with two Acura MDX sport-utility vehicles on a 40-foot trailer attached to his truck.
Munn exited Route 30 at Centerville Road. As he was rounding a curve on the off-ramp, the trailer rolled to the left. Both SUVs fell off the trailer and overturned in the adjacent on-ramp from Centerville Road to eastbound Route 30, police said.
Teresa Maldonado, 45, of East Clay Street, was driving a Ford Expedition on the on-ramp, and one of the SUVs struck her vehicle, police said.
A Susquehanna Valley ambulance crew treated Maldonado at the scene. Munn was not hurt. The Expedition and both SUVs on the trailer had extensive damage, police said.
The crash remains under investigation as police want to determine if both SUVs were properly secured on the trailer.
Firefighters and fire-police from Rohrerstown, Lancaster Township, Hempfield, and West Hempfield companies responded with police and the ambulance crew.
Also on Wednesday afternoon, several teenagers were injured when a car rolled over several times on New Danville Pike, south of Brenneman Road, in Pequea Township.
Five 16 and 17-year-olds from Lancaster, Willow Street, and Manheim were in the 2000 Volkswagen that crashed on a curve at about 4 p.m., Southern Regional police said.
The car skidded 141 feet, struck a utility pole, and traveled another 280 feet into a field. It rolled over several times before coming to rest on its wheels, Officer Adam Cramer said.
At least two of the teens were taken to an area hospital. Their conditions were unavailable. Police did not release their names as they are juveniles.
All of the teens were wearing seat belts, police said.
Another injury crash happened at about 9 p.m. Wednesday on Peters Road, west of New Holland.
A Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by Brian Blank, 32, Gordonville, and a Chevrolet Avalanche driven by Mervin Stoltzfus, 20, Gap, collided almost head-on, New Holland police Officer Mark Willwerth said.
Blank was driving south. He was in the 200 block of Peters Road in Earl Township when his car crossed the yellow line, Willwerth said.
Stoltzfus, who was driving north, tried to avoid the crash but was unsuccessful.
Blank was injured and taken to Lancaster General Hospital. Stoltzfus and his passenger, Rosemary Lapp, 19, Intercourse, were not hurt. The crash closed Peters Road for about one-half hour.
