If I were to land a job that would be closer to my home, and a reasonable distance (5 miles or less), my Trek will be used a lot harder than it is now......

You're right--distance is definitely a consideration. I'm lucky enough to be within a mile and half of my job. I realize not everyone is that fortunate. To be honest, I do drive my car to work occasionally. I've been mulling over the idea of selling it, but I don't know if I could get to everywhere I need to go without it (unfortunately).

One reason the Amish don't have everything the "English" do is to intentionally be different or "separate". Having a tv or car is only wrong because they chose to join a church that decided that is an unnecessary item. This is how they feel the need to live to obey this Bible verse.

2 Corinthians 6:17
Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you

No. Why can they not own a car, and use it for just the necessary things? Also, if they truly believe that the ownership of a vehicle is wrong, why would they pay someone else to drive them places? This seems to contribute to another individual's "sin"........

Just to thicken the plot even more.... they may and do own vehicles, like construction trucks for instance. They agree to not drive them in accordence with the community order, which is revisited bi-annually.

You guys are dead on about the stay home more and take care of your family and the community concept.

So it sounds like it is more of a particular church thing, and not a general Amish thing........

From what I understand, the local Bishop sets, or loosens, the "rules", restrictions, whatever you want to call them.
