An 11-year-old Lancaster boy died after his bicycle collided with a car Sunday evening in the eastern part of the city, police said.

Drew Bogroff died at Lancaster General Hospital following the 5:38 crash at East Madison and North Reservoir streets, Sgt. Mark Radmore said.

Bogroff, whose family lives near the accident scene, apparently rode his BMX-style bike into the path of a 1992 Honda Accord sedan driven by Michael Scott, 42, of Lancaster, Radmore said.

The accident remains under investigation, but witnesses said the victim died trying to help others.

Bogroff had seen a fight or some other disturbance in a nearby park and was trying to get home quickly to alert his family to call police, according to Heather Wax, a passerby who stopped at the accident scene.

Wax, a former Lancaster resident now living in Columbia, said neighbors told her of young Bogroff's actions.

Police, who could not be reached this morning to confirm that account, do not believe the motorist was at fault.

It appears the youth rode his bike into the path of the car, Radmore said.

The city police Collision Investigation Team, headed by Officer Jeff Gerhart, is looking into the accident.
