State police are investigating the theft of $350 and other items Sunday from a Bible camp fundraiser in Bowmansville.
The cash, a laptop computer and 90 unopened pints of Turkey Hill iced tea were taken from a lodge at Greenview Bible Camp on Fivepointville Road in Brecknock Township, state police said.
The cash — 350 $1 bills — was donated during a fund raising event attended by hundreds of motorcyclists, Trooper James Algeo said.
The crowded event opened at 1 p.m., and investigators say the items were taken after that. Algeo said the hundreds of people attending the event provided plenty of cover for the thief or thieves.
"With more than 700 people, who knows where everyone was?" Algeo said. "People could have wandered around wherever they wanted."
Camp officials realized Monday morning the money was stolen and called police, Algeo said.
The money was taken after the donations were placed in a lodge office, which was unlocked during the event, officials told police. The unlocked building also may have been entered by someone who returned to the camp later in the day, when the event was over, police said.
The computer — with a value of at least $200 — was stolen from the lodge's basement, according to police. The iced teas were kept in a refrigerator inside the lodge, officials told police. Each pint retails for about $1.
Thefts at religious fundraisers are rare, police said. "This is the first that I know of," Algeo said. The trooper said he wasn't sure what the raised funds were going to be used for.
Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call state police in Ephrata at 721-7667.
Calls made to the Bible camp Monday night were not answered.
