WINE
Wine-grape-growing expert, Dr. Richard Smart, visited Lancaster County last week.
Great grapes
One of the world's leading wine-grape-growing experts, Dr. Richard Smart, visited Lancaster County last week for a walk through Waltz Vineyard, Manheim, followed by presentations at the Lancaster Farm and Home Center.
More than 150 winery operators and wine-grape growers from throughout Pennsylvania and neighboring states attended Smart's visit.
A native of Australia, Smart travels the world, offering grape-growing advice to winery operators. During his local visit, he focused on his two areas of viticulture expertise: canopy and crop management.
Pennsylvania is the fifth-largest wine-grape producer in the nation and ranks eighth in wine output, with approximately 919,950 gallons produced in 2007. The state is home to more than 150 wine-grape growers and more than 120 wineries.
