A retired Little Britain Township man died when his car collided with a Quarryville man's fuel truck early Tuesday afternoon on Route 272, just south of the Lancaster-Chester County boundary.
Van Steel, 63, of Lloyds Road, Oxford, died in the 12:30 p.m. crash, Avondale state police said.
Steel was retired after working 37 years as a lineman for the Verizon phone company, a family member said.
Steel was driving a 2005 Buick LaCrosse north on Route 272 toward Lancaster County. He was on his way home from a Wawa store at Nottingham, the family member said.
At a left curve near Glen Roy Road in West Nottingham Township, his car crossed into the oncoming lane and collided with a 1997 International fuel truck driven by Michael Carr, 26, of East State Street, Quarryville, Trooper David Brodeur said.
Steel was pronounced dead at the scene. Carr was treated for minor injuries at Jennersville Hospital, police said.
Also in neighboring Chester County, a 6 a.m. crash today closed Route 322 at the Cambridge Road intersection, east of Honey Brook.
A car struck a pole, and there was one injury, Chester County emergency dispatchers reported.
Embreeville state police are investigating the crash. Troopers were still at the scene at 8:30 a.m. A police spokesman said Route 322 probably would be closed until about noon.
