Eric Umble, a 17-year-old Lancaster Mennonite High School senior, will bring his passions for music and community service together by hosting a classical music benefit concert to support local organizations.
The performance will be the third concert by the Lancaster Benefit Orchestra, an ensemble Umble organizes by recruiting regional professionals and advanced students, who donate their services. The orchestra will perform the Egmont Overture and Beethoven's third symphony (The "Eroica"), at 7 p.m. Saturday, at Community Mennonite Church, 328 W. Orange St., Lancaster.
Donations will support Clare House, a transitional housing program for abused and homeless women and children.
Eric, a clarinet player, has performed with Franklin and Marshall's music ensembles for two years. Last summer, he approached his mentor, Brian Norcross, with the idea of organizing a benefit concert, and Norcross agreed to conduct. A concert held in July 2007 raised $850 for Crispus Attucks and Milagro House; a concert in June netted almost $2,000 for Milagro House.
MAKE OVER YOUR SCHOOL
Does your school's gym need a makeover? Could the library use an updated collection of books? Help could be on the way from Henkel, one of the country's largest marketers of household brands, including Dial soaps, Renuzit air fresheners and Right Guard antiperspirants.
Through the 2008 Henkel Helps Schools contest, which runs through Sept. 22, one winning school will be awarded a $25,000 cash prize for renovations and updates.
To enter the Henkel Helps Schools contest, students and other members of the community can visit
www.henkelhelps.com to nominate an area in their school that needs a transformation.
A panel of judges will narrow down the nominations to 10 finalists, based on originality of the nomination, creativity, enthusiasm exhibited in the essay and grammar. Online voting will run Oct. 6 through Oct. 19 and will determine which finalist school wins the grand prize. Two additional schools will be chosen to receive runner-up prizes of $2,500 for school improvements.
In addition to the contest, consumers can go to henkelhelps.com to enter to win a weekly prize-pack drawing of Henkel products, worth $200. Henkel will give away one prize pack per week during the contest period.
CELEBRITY NEWS AND NOTES
• "We saw and tested the movie, and we believe a strong movie deserves a strong playdate," Clark Woods, president of MGM Distribution, says of Tom Cruise's next big-ticket release, the WWII flick "Valkyrie," which has been given a Dec. 26 opening date — after being pushed back twice over the last year.
• Has Ali Lohan, the 14-year-old sister of Lindsay, undergone a breast-augmentation procedure?
"How dare you?" Writing on her blog, LiLo says she was appalled when two paparazzi accosted her with the question. "My response simply was, 'Did you really just ask me that? She is a 14-year-old girl, and you are a pedophile!' " says the thespian. "It made me feel a bit sick to my stomach." Her mother, she says, would never allow such a thing in the first place.
She ends with a note of optimism: "i got some great clothes from alexander wang and i miss samantha (Ronson) cuz she's out of town :( have a wonderful day everyone."
