A former Lancaster school principal who lives in Holtwood is the new superintendent of the Oxford Area School District.
Raymond A. Fischer, 54, was hired Monday by the Oxford school board for a five-year term as superintendent. He had been the district's assistant superintendent.
"As a student-oriented teacher and administrator throughout my career, it is an honor and privilege to have this opportunity to serve the students of Oxford and their parents and guardians as superintendent," Fischer said in a prepared statement.
Fischer replaces Mary Jane Gales, who resigned as Oxford superintendent to become legislative director of the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit.
Fischer was principal of Hamilton Elementary School in 2001, and in the 1980s served as principal of St. Leo the Great School on Marietta Avenue.
In 1991, he became principal of Oxford's Jordan Bank and Hopewell schools. In 1994, after a two-year stint as principal of Oxford's Elk Ridge School, Fischer became the Oxford district's assistant superintendent.
In the spring of 2001, Fischer left Oxford and took the job of principal of Hamilton Elementary on Wabank Road in Lancaster. He went back to Oxford schools in January 2002 as principal of Elk Ridge School. In 2005, he returned to his previous job as Oxford's assistant superintendent.
Fischer earned bachelor's and master's degrees in elementary education at Millersville University. He got a master's degree in school administration at Temple University and earned a doctorate in school leadership from Immaculata College.
Fischer and his wife, Nancy, have a daughter, Christina Musselman, who is an art teacher at Elk Ridge School.
