Summer will make one last stand this Labor Day with warmer-than-usual temperatures but little rain to get in the way of festivities.
AccuWeather meteorologist Jon Pacheco said, with the exception of today, outdoor enthusiasts will be pleased with summer's last hurrah.
"(Today) is the only wet day in the forecast over the next five days," Pacheco said. "There's going to be a weak front moving through, so we're expecting spotty showers and thunderstorm activity across much of Pennsylvania. But not everyone will see that."
Fans of Labor Day weekend's time-honored traditions, including the 30th annual Long's Park Art & Craft Festival running through Monday, and the mammoth 24th annual auction to benefit Hospice of Lancaster County running today and Monday, will be tickled after the rain stops later tonight.
"Closer to Labor Day, we're expecting high pressure to build across the entire northeast for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday," Pacheco said. "That will bring sunny, dry and warm conditions for this time of year."
But it won't be blazing heat. Daytime temperatures are expected to be in the 80s followed by cool nights with temperatures in the 60s."A few spots might even get close to the 90s, which is 5 to 10 degrees above normal temperatures for this time of year," Pacheco said. "But the good news is we're not expecting any wet weather for the holiday, so people interested in boating and grilling will have great conditions."
And the dry weather will continue into next weekend.
"The next chance for precipitation is Friday or next Saturday, and that will be the earliest," Pacheco said.
The relatively wet start to summer didn't keep pace after the end of July. Pacheco said the most recent rainfall brought about 75 percent of the summer's rain in just two days.
"It looks like the last measurable precipitation was Aug. 25, but that was just .06 inches, and then we had some on Aug. 10. But before that, the last significant rainfall was at the end of July, so it's been about a month," Pacheco said.
"We were above normal to start the summer, but since that, we've just been bone dry."
