A person was struck and killed while standing near a disabled vehicle on a stretch of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Lancaster County this morning, according to state police.

Around 6:30, troopers said, a westbound car traveling through Brecknock Township became disabled with a flat tire and stopped on the roadway.

Both the driver and passenger got out of the vehicle, troopers said. Then the driver got back in the car to move it off the road,

At that point, another westbound vehicle struck and killed the passenger who was still standing along the highway.

The identity of the person was not available at press time and the accident was still under investigation.

About the same time, in Lancaster City, a man crossing Lemon Street at North Queen Street on his way to work was struck by a car turning onto North Queen Street, police said.

The man sustained minor leg injuries and was taken to nearby Lancaster General Hospital for treatment, police said. The accident was still under investigation and names were not available this morning.

If you are posing a safety hazard on the road.. call the police and have them provide you with some protection before attempting to change a tire or while waiting for a tow. The turnpike now has state farm safey patrols according to thier website: *11 is the number...

If you look at wgal's website, you will see a picture of the car that hit this person, so obviously, they stopped. And as you say pedestrians having the right of way in any situation, no one really expects pedestrians to be on the turnpike, in fact, I think it's illegal. The accident happened at 6:30 am, still not very light out. So, before you jump down the throat of the driver, get your facts straight. I'm sure the driver is feeling mortified by the accident.

You saying for me to get my facts straight, well you mean to tell me this person can see no more then 10 to 20 feet in front of them at 6:30 in the morning? And they probably had their headlights on high beam at the 65 you claim they were driving, I've been on the turnpike and they drive a lot faster then the 65 posted, try more like 85 to 90, because I've had people pass me like I was sitting still, when I was going 65 to 70 on the turnpike.

And as far as no pedestrians on the turnpike, then how in the world are you to change a flat you might get, what are you supposed to wait until a state trooper comes along, or call one? Not all people that drive have cell phones!!!... and if a pedestrian isn't supposed to be on the turnpike, then why do they have those call boxes, if your not allowed to get out of the car to use them. Don't jump in my butt, because a person can't see a break down of a car at 6:30 am, I could see if the sun was in their eyes, but the guy was traveling west when he hit the passenger. And I don't remember the article saying it was foggy outside at the time either. Oh And I'm sure the drive is mortified after the fact.

Until we know all the facts, we are just peeing into the wind.

Tell me, mikerob, were you at the scene? Did you investigate the accident? You are jumping all over this driver and you don't know anything about the accident. You are quit the know it all aren't you.

Section 3544. Pedestrians walking along or on highway.
(a) Mandatory use of available sidewalk.—Where a sidewalk is provided and its use is practicable, it is unlawful for any pedestrian to walk along and upon an adjacent roadway.

( Absence of sidewalk.—Where a sidewalk is not available, any pedestrian walking along and upon a highway shall walk only on a shoulder as far as practicable from the edge of the roadway.

© Absence of sidewalk and shoulder.—Where neither a sidewalk nor a shoulder is available, any pedestrian walking along and upon a highway shall walk as near as practicable to an outside edge of the roadway and, if on a two-way roadway, shall walk only on the left side of the roadway.

(d) Right-of-way to vehicles.—Except as otherwise provided in this subchapter, any pedestrian upon a roadway shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles upon the roadway.

Here, too, are some little known or practiced pedestrian laws. We all must take responsibility for our own safety.

My sympathy goes out to this gentlemens' family.

Please, please, please take the widest path available around someone pulled over on the berm of the road.
