Police are investigating the robbery of this PNC Bank branch at Schaum's Corner this morning.

A middle-aged man walked into the PNC Bank branch at Schaum's Corner with a glove on one hand and a plastic bag and walked out with cash shortly after 8 a.m. today.

But his good fortune was short lived.

The man, who had not been identified by deadline, was being held by police about 40 minutes later in the parking lot of the Ephrata Cloister Shopping Center, about four miles north on Route 272.

He was surrounded at about 8:45 by state police and officers from Ephrata and Akron before being taken into custody by a West Earl Township Police officer.

Police had heard a description of the man's older-model Ford Escort sedan and spotted it at the shopping center, 140 N. Reading Road. The car bore New Mexico license plates and faded bumper stickers supporting the police DARE program and several police organizations.

The man, wearing sweatpants, a T-shirt and jacket, was ordered to the ground by officers with drawn handguns, a witness said. The suspect was held there in handcuffs for several minutes before being read his rights and taken to the West Earl police office for questioning.

The car, which was impounded and towed away, carried a road atlas, boxes of breakfast cereal and a Play Station console game box.

PNC corporate officials this morning declined to comment on the robbery.

The bank branch, which until recent months was a Bank of Lancaster County branch, remained closed late this morning. It opened at 8 — only about five minutes before the robbery occurred.

The same branch was robbed in a similar manner almost exactly a year ago, newspaper records show.

No further information was available late this morning.

I do live in Brownstown and I do know that this bank does NOT have an Ephrata address.

Go to the very first post in this thread by "Lancaster Online"
note the following;

"Brownstown Bank robbed..."
"A West Earl Township bank was robbed..."
(Ephrata is not in West Earl Township)

On PNC's website they list this bank's address as;

PA-272 & CHURCH STREET
BROWNSTOWN, PA 17508

The Brownstown post office services 17508.
Schaum's corner is south of Akron.
Ephrata does not extend through and beyond Akron.
Akron is north of Brownstown on 272 and Ephrata is north of Akron on 272.
LOL got it right on their first couple of articles then on the most recent revision they screwed up the headline.

Whoops. Maybe you need to check the facts before you post. As the other poster put it there are plenty of Ephrata address' south of Akron. In fact check all the houses in the School lane development.

Not only is your picture in the paper being arrested, but they also call you middle aged! He's having a real bad day.
oh geez
Back in the 90's banks in Lancaster and other townships were getting robbed every day it seemed like. They always got away! Then I read a great book by a former bank robber which I highly recommend. It's called The man who outgrew his prison cell, confessions of a former bank robber. By Joe Loya. It's a great read. He was the best in the business, and got away with it for 15 years until he went to Norwalk Calif. In that town they do something real simple. They just put a dime sized chip into each stack of bills that can't be felt or detected by the robber. No more of this pink dye stuff. That just wasn't working. Easy to bleach out later. But the chip is a tracking device. Mr. Loya was surrounded by cops and helicopters about 10 minutes after he got on the freeway. Oops. He spent about 15 years behind bars, and wrote his book. So, all you bankrobbers,I think the party's over.You just never know where that chip might be, and frankly, if you spend time looking for it, chances are you'll be caught just doing that! Who knows, you just might be a better writer than bankrobber!
