Jack, you need to spend a week in a wheelchair.

Try going somewhere, getting to the end of the block and finding that there's no ramp, so you have to wheel yourself back to the other end of the block again, and then go down the center of the street with cars whizzing past you at 90 miles per hour.

Try going somewhere, getting halfway down the block, and finding that the sidewalk is so broken that you can't get through.

Try going somewhere, only to find that somebody can't be bothered to clear the snow and ice off their sidewalk, three days after the snow fell.

Try shopping for clothes, only to find that the racks are so close together that clothes catch on the wheelchair, and the racks go falling down, and everybody looks at you like it's your fault the store is impassible.

Try getting a 32"-wide wheelchair through a 29" doorway.

Try getting down from the sidewalk at a fast-food restaurant when the ramp is blocked by someone parked illegally.

Try getting into a fast food restaurant where you have to enter a door, go 24 inches, make a 90-degree turn, and turn again.

The Americans With Disabilities Act isn't just a good idea. It's a federal law - but we're just now in the process of adding ramps to the sidewalks around town, even though the law requiring it is nearly two decades old.

When we start treating disabled people with respect, the favor is likely to be returned.

Despite the ADA, Mountville Boro will not put handicap access in front of our church, and has even removed the pedestrian crossing that was there (not that any of the jackasses ever stopped for it). We were told that access ramps at either end of the block are sufficient. And yes, we are almost smack in the middle of the two ramps
