I would say 4,000 would more than likely be the correct number, if the 4000 figure came from the fire marshal. The first story appears to be written soon after the fire, and probably was just a very rough estimation in the initial moments after the fire. Also the fact that the number 3,967 was given instead of a generic rounded 1500/1700/2000/3500 type number....After the owners had time to check numbers and records and such and figure an exact number out...
Regardless, it is a horrible loss... in terms of life and finances both.
