QUOTE (capn crunch @ Dec 17 2008, 08:51 AM)
Unions are a joke. 13 paid holidays a year? This is the reason why the US auto industry is broke: paying a lawyer's salary to work in a factory. Ridiculous.
NPR has been doing a series on auto workers. They interviewed a woman yesterday who makes crankshafts and earns $28.00 an hour. I have no idea what the cost of living is in her area. Surely most of us could live comfortably on that amount. However, I venture to say lawyers earn considerably more than that.
I also venture to say that the road crew in Columbia makes nowhere near $28.00 an hour.
The bottom line is that any loss in benefits is going to create a crunch. When a family goes from having a small co-pay to paying a larger portion of their medical bills, that will have an impact. Who would not try to maintain something that is a current benefit? And if the workers are willing to give up benefits management has to be willing to give something in return.
One has to wonder if their management has given up any benefits as a show of good faith.
