Some people shop at thrift stores because they choose to, not because they HAVE to, you know. It's a form of recycling that finally seems to have caught on. Salvation Army is always packed when I go there, with people of a myriad of demographics. Now people are going to be discouraged from buying second hand. Great.

I agree completely. The less we have to spend on clothes to keep everyone looking nice and relatively in style, the more we have for vacations, college savings, and special things we want to do as a family. Except for shoes/underwear/pj's, my husband's business attire that has to be a certain quality, and things for the picky stage my daughter is in, I balk at buying new clothing anymore.

Hi License, this actually shocked me too which is why I ahd to come on and comment. I did see a "HOUSE" episode where two teenage boys who bought jeans off the back of a truck got deathly ill and of course House saved them in the end but the clothing was treated with a pesticide that these boys were allergic to or something like that.

The guy selling the stolen jeans out of the back of the truck spilled pesticide on them. Kinda not the same as Goodwill. Just sayin'

Seems to me that if they regulate the new clothes, the used clothes will be fine.

I agree, eventually it will be fine. I'm just guessing (pure speculation) that places like Goodwill and Salvation Army might throw their current stock of kid's items in the dumpster on February 9th, to be in full compliance. That would be such a waste.

A "low budget" company will just stop selling clothing meant for children.

Prepare for not being able to easily find kids clothing and prepare for when you do find them they will be astronomically priced and you'll be just fine.

This is a bit more complicated than - it will get better eventually and you get what you pay for and some people have to shop at these places.

Once again our lovely government is making a mess of things. Resale shops, consignment, and thrift stores, ebay, craigs list etc., are affected. It is not a matter of just throwing out current inventory and then all will be ok. It will take quite awhile for items that have been specifically proven safe to be passed on to these stores. And for stores majoring in childrens items this would be detrimental. And what about regular retail stores I am not sure how this affects them, will they have to prove their inventory is safe?

resellers cannot sell children's products that exceed the lead limit and therefore should avoid products that are likely to have lead content.
Beginning Feb. 10, the lead limit will be 600 parts per million per product. It drops to 300 parts per million Aug. 14.
If resellers offer second-hand items in violation of these limits they could face civil or criminal charges.

The majority of items - toys and clothing are safe, but for stores to have to prove it is a ridicoulus idea (should have been done through the manufaturer long ago)! These are the same items you buy at the mall, boutiques, department and specialty stores, they are just being resold. So if you already own it and purchased it at the mall (and have been wearing and playing with it) and a year later a thrift store ends up with it, why are we required to prove it is safe after it has been out there? Now we just need to avoid selling those products or face civil fines. Great. No pressure.

And why are they dropping the level from 600 to 300 ppm?

Sorry for the rant
