That is interesting. I wondered where Radon came from however if it is in the ground under your home, how does smoking effect it? That is a legit question by the way not being sarcastic, just wondering.
I wonder with the new fire safe cigarettes for stupid smokers who burn their houses down, if a few years down the chemical they put in to make them firesafe, ends up causing something. Personal responsibility again but oh well, you are right get over it.
The article specifically stated that home builders are not required to test and realtors do not include radon testing in an inspection of the home. I am sure you can PAY for one but if it is this dangerous and this prevalent(70% of homes in pa) then the governemnt should require it. Especially with finished basements where families spend so much of their time.
Jake if they ever allow us to live there all year I am so doing it. We do not pay property or school tax but the down side of that is we can not LIVE there full time. Nor can we get mail there.
I was kidding about smoking causing radon. It's just a natural occurrence, caused by decaying elements in the ground.
Is there a chemical in the firesafe ones? I thought it was just some weird double wrapper? IDK
I didn't really read the complete article, just skipped around.
Gotcha on the Bay!

I still don't understand the last sentence. For the builders to do this work is minimal when a house is being constructed. To do it afterwards is a real pain! No longer can you run the piping through the walls, but instead it has to be run up the outside of the house. This is a cheap thing to do when a house is being built: stub in some PVC in the basement floor, bore a few holes and run the piping through the walls, and run it through the roof with a boot.
I know when I bought my house I had to have the radon test done, and my dad builds houses and they have to put a radon system in every new house, It's a big 6 or 8" PVC pipe that goes in a gravel pit in the middle of the basement and runs straight, or almost straight, up to the roof. I doubt his boss does this out of his own generosity, cause hes cheap, and that would save a few bucks. I don't think they test it, but the system is there. Maybe that's just a local code though?
