What a sad story. How devastating this must be for the families involved. A friend attends the deceased individual's church and they were told that the car had swerved to avoid a buggy with no lights that they saw at the last minute. Have no idea how true that is since it is not mentioned in the article -- no other witnesses I'm guessing, but seeing the article about the runaway buggy that hit 6 cars got me wondering about how costs are handled when you are in an accident with a buggy (or just a horse -- once saw a local chasing his horse down route 23 after it ran away from the blacksmith shop) and the fault is not yours. Can't imagine what insurance companies do. Anyone ever been in an accident with a buggy where the buggy was clearly at fault? What happened with insurance settlement? Is this just one where you swallow the costs of the uninsured?

I believe that the Amish or Mennonite used to pay for damages out of pocket. There is a special insurance for them now, but I don't know much about it. It was just mentioned to me by a family friend who drives for the Amish.

That's kind of my point -- how many people do you know who could pay out of pocket for what is most likely body damage to 6 vehicles? I know the "black-bumper" Mennonites have insurance called the "Sharing Plan", but that's because it is required by law for all drivers. Just wondering if buggy-drivers have any similar legal requirement or if everyone else's insurance picks up the difference in the form of uninsured motorist.
