QUOTE (lee41 @ Feb 26 2009, 10:59 PM)

The news changed overnight. The Anti-Terror unit called MU and requested that they be allowed to provide security as a training exercise. Yesterday the DA was calling MU's decision to invite Ayers, "a remarkable irresponsible choice."

Today, he is saying that "Ayers has an absoloute right to speak."

Politics at its finest!!!

Speaking on their behalf, Lancaster County District Attorney Craig Stedman said law enforcement must provide security if the university requests it, "regardless of how we feel about an unrepentant terrorist."

However, he called MU's decision to invite Ayers "a remarkably irresponsible choice" and urged the university to consider alternatives, such as remote video, "which would provide a forum without the public safety risks or costs."

Also:

Stedman said, "Especially in these economic times, I believe it is unthinkable that any taxpayer money should be spent on a situation entirely created by choice, and I believe the university should pay for all costs."

Craig Stedman, Lancaster County district attorney, said his office will be available for security assistance if called upon.

"(Ayers) has the absolute right to speak," Stedman said. "The university has an absolute right to invite him, and law enforcement has a responsibility to do everything we can to keep the peace.

"Whether we agree with him or not, we'll do our job regardless of who the person is, as we've done in the past."

The county's Republican delegation in the state Legislature has been vocal in its criticism of Millersville University for bringing Ayers to its campus.

Sounds like the right hand didn't know what the left hand was doing. I hope the cases this guy prosecutes are not handled the same way!!

I think it sounds like the reporters are reporting before they get their facts straight. As usual.

Please why you would conclude that?

The quotes have so much disparity that it couldn't possibly be that divergent.

It is Stedman who has changed his tune about the whole thing!

Suppose - GOD FORBID - that something would happen to someone the District Attorney was speaking out against (who was merely exercising his 1st amendment rights)?

Would that person get a pass on any prosecution? Would they get LESS of a criminal charge because the District Attorney gave tacit approval by his public condemnation?

I had my disagreements with former District Attorney Don Totaro but I will say this about him: Totaro would bite his tongue off before publicly speaking about ANY topic.

District Attorney Craig Stedman needs to understand and appreciate the gravity of the position he have been given (he had ZERO competition for the position from the republicans OR the democrats) Public comments about ANYTHING should ALWAYS be measured for what is BEST for the public. Not what is best politically.

I have been very proud of the District Attorney's comments defending the constitution in the past. I hope that this experience makes him taken council before speaking out again on such matters. It's vital that the public has the great confidence in him and the office for the sake of our justice system.

Edited to add: For the record, while not approving of Ayers in the least, I think that ignoring the guy would have been the best way to handle it. I found it fascinating that our school systems which FLIP OUT over the slightest HINT of violence (a mere drawing of a gun has resulted in some kids being suspended) would hire someone whose life experience includes violence. Political correctness?
