Defamation and fear of law suit? I don't buy it. That's a cop-out and you know it.

This officer was a bad apple in Manheim Township, and everyone knew it. We're not talking about an employee copping a few minutes of sleep on the job during a midnight shift, but a guy known to others as abusing his authority to help have sex with numerous underage children.

The fact that they needed an unrelated technicality as the only method of firing him is bad enough ... the fact that nobody from MT ever dropped a dime on him - enabling him to molest countless other children for over a decade at his new police job is almost criminal.

Cafeteria workers at an elementry school are subject to far more background investigation than this police officer job candidate endured. Defamation of character? Whose character, the MTPD or the kiddie molestor?

Once again, RR, you did not read my post. The Chief of Marysville or the person he had do the background inv., IMHO, did a poor background investigation. Like I said. MTPD could not comment on what this guy did because he was cleared of the charges. However, if the Marysville investigator had done a little snooping around, as he should have, he would have found out the goods on this guy. I sure would not have hired him. I am not making excuses for these different PD's but some of them have no idea how to do a background check. And yes, that needs to change. The police did not make the court decisions on what kind of info can be given out by an employer. The police and other employers have to live with what the courts rule.

GP my point is someone, anyone from Manheim Township should have dropped an "anonymous" dime on this guy when it was discovered he was seeking employment for, or hired onto another police job in our home state.

Law enforcement sets up "tips" and "hot lines" all the time encouraging citizens to break their wall of silence during police investigations so that known dangerous people can be prevented from harming innocents again.

So tell me, exactly, why doesn't this anonymous tip line concept work when law enforcement needs to protect citizens from a known bad apple lurking among themselves?

Terry, call the SP Lancaster Station at 299-7650 and ask for the crime supervisor. Explain your problem and he should be able to help you.

GP...you think I should call the State Police instead of Manheim Borough?

Yes, Terry, call the number I posted. State Police handle Megan's law violations.

I agree with you, RR, someone should have let the investigator know about this guy. Still don't know how far the inv. went with his background check. It might have just been one phone call and nothing more.

Really? Sounds to me like MT was the only Department that did the RIGHT thing. They charged him with a criminal offense. It was a JURY that aquitted him. Then two other tiny burgs hired this loser knowing his past? Who enabled him? MT or the JURY. Sounds like the JURY to me and you are just trying once again to malign the police when they did the RIGHT thing.
