Perhaps not, but they're a necessary evil. Without them, the courts couldn't handle all the cases. I also think some charges would be dropped because of that speedy trial requirement. I'm sure GP can clear that up a bit.

Plea deals can be good or bad. But it does save lot's of taxpayer money and court time. With all that goes on, it would be nearly impossible to 'try' every single crime that occurs. As long as the plea is somewhere near sentencing guidelines - why not accept a plea and move on. Especially for nonviolent stuff.

I hear you, but the deals made are not consistent from case to case. Back room bargains by lawyers who are buddies with the district attorneys make the system corrupt.
