(2)At Drumore's May 7 supervisors meeting, officials told residents that Richard Wenger of East Drumore Township has submitted an application to build a shopping center near the proposed Drumore Crossings shopping hub, one that's slated to contain retail space, a convenience store and an unnamed fast-food restaurant.
A hearing on the newly proposed center is slated to take place at the Drumore municipal building, 1675 Furniss Road, at 7:30 p.m. May 28.
"The applicant submitted an application at the end of March, and in April members of the planning commission heard a presentation … about the site," township engineer Mark Deimler said May 11.
On May 26, he said, the township planners will make a recommendation on the center to the supervisors. Then, Deimler said, on May 28 supervisors will hold a conditional-use hearing and take testimony.
A decision on the application, he said, could be made that night.
Deimler said the proposed shopping center would be built on the site of a former Pontiac dealership in Buck, a space that is now vacant with the exception of a notary public who rents office space there.
In other news, Drumore officials have given the go-ahead to Lancaster County Conservancy to erect signs marking a 12-mile bike trail.
At a supervisors meeting April 2, conservancy representative Carl Martin came before the board to "float" the idea of a trail as a way to help lure outdoors enthusiasts to both the municipality and the conservancy's 167-acre Fishing Creek Nature Preserve.
At the May 7 meeting, Deimler told residents that the trail would begin where Fishing Creek Hollow Road meets Chestnut Level Road. From there it would proceed down Furniss Road, past the Drumore municipal building and then through the nature preserve.
The trail would then proceed north up Susquehannock Drive to River Road, where it would meet Chestnut Level Road, bringing riders back to their starting point.
In other business, supervisors have announced that the township building will be used as a pickup site for the Lancaster County Prescription Drug Discount Program once the program starts at the end of May.
Program coordinator Angie Eichelberger said the new initiative is being put forward through the Lancaster County Commissioners in partnership with the National Association of Counties in Washington, D.C.
"This program offers residents a discount on medications that are not covered by any other insurance plans, and the cards are honored at 91 participating pharmacies in Lancaster County," Eichelberger said May 11.
"This is not an insurance plan. This is a discount for what isn't covered by insurance," she said. "What we're trying to do … is to help provide savings in these hard economic times."
Eichelberger said that there are no disqualifying factors or income requirements to receive a card and that the only requirement is that the cardholder be a resident of Lancaster County.
To receive a card, contact the Drumore Township office at 548-2660. For more information visit www.co.lancaster.pa.us or www.naco.org.
Finally, Friends of Fishing Creek will host PPL naturalist Jim Smith at 8 a.m. May 30 at Drumore Park, adjacent to the township building, to discuss flora and fauna found along Fishing Creek. For more information, call 284-7078.
