A 2-year-old girl was killed Tuesday in what investigators are calling an accident on an Amish farm in Strasburg Township.

The girl was riding on a forklift with a relative when the machine toppled over, according to state police. The girl became pinned under the forklift and died on her family's farm at 378 Bunker Hill Road, officials said.

Lancaster County Coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni said the girl had been pulled out from under the lift when deputy coroner Dave Schmitt arrived at the scene. The impact likely killed the girl immediately, officials said.

Schmitt pronounced the girl dead soon after the 2:40 p.m. incident, and her body was taken to the Lancaster County morgue.

Police and the coroner declined to identify the girl Tuesday.

An external exam of the girl's body is scheduled for this morning, the coroner said. If that exam doesn't determine what killed the girl, further tests will be performed, Diamantoni said.

"Depending on what we see, we will make that decision" after the external viewing, Diamantoni said Tuesday evening.

The incident happened on the Esh farm, just south of Strasburg Borough. The girl was riding on the lap of a 16-year-old boy — either her brother or an uncle. The lift traveled over an embankment and toppled, according to police.

Police said the girl was "crushed" after she was ejected from the forklift's seat.

I think the point that most seem to be missing here in correlation to the Amish sect is the fact that they are not held accountable legally. If I were to drive in a vehicle and not
take the state mandated precaution of using a seat belt and something were to happen to my two year old then I would be held accountable legally-usually neglect or worse-even vehicular homicide. There is a sort of discrimination that is often overlooked. While I respect totally the Amish community I believe that all human beings should be treated equally-even when it comes to government regulations.

EXACTLY

I TRULY BELIEVE THE AMISH PEOPLE DO NOT SEE THE ERROR IN THEIR WAYS
AND WHEN A TRAGETY LIKE THIS BEFALLS THEM
IT IS RIGHT AWAY INTERPRETED AS AN "ACT OF GOD"

With all this discussion, how does everyone know for sure, that the operattor of the forklift isn't going to be convicted of neglience?

i dought it, not because he's amish but for the fact that he's a juvenile even though it was negligent
it was still an accidental death
and thats what they will rule it an accident

Im late posting on this thread but I have to agree w/what many posters are saying. It does seem many Amish take the 'reasoning' of 'God's will' to an extreme. I see small Amish children playing on and close to the road w/no adult in sight. (as young looking as 2 yrs old.) I would freak out if my grandson were that close to the road with or without other children.

I've had an Amish neighbor when we lst move here ask for a ride to the hospitol & I didn't know for sure where it was. His son's fingers were crushed by a wagon & there was blood all over. I said he should call an ambulance and he refused! The boy never did regain the use of one of his fingers. I cannot believe he was pinching pennies, worried about the cost of an ambulance ...and I wonder why they don't vet their cats? O_O
