Flip-flop bargain hunters mob store

A throng of shoppers reportedly hunting for bargain-price flip-flops jammed the Old Navy store at Red Rose Commons, 1700 Fruitville Pike, Saturday, and had to be dispersed by police and firefighters.

Police responded to a call at 9:49 a.m.

The store temporarily closed its doors until the crowd thinned and the exits were cleared, Lancaster Bureau of Fire Battalion Chief Brian Klugh said. "We went out and helped them out with it and got it under control."

CRASHES:
West Hempfield Township police reported a three-vehicle crash that happened at 4:55 p.m. Thursday.

Suheer Najee, 32, Landisville, failed to stop for traffic at a red light on Stony Battery Road and Corporate Boulevard  and struck the rear of a car driven by Lawrence Burrows Jr., 39, Millersville, which in turn struck a car driven by Michael Fritz, 60, Mount Joy, police said. Najee was cited for following too closely.

•Several vehicles parked at a garage sale at Route 23 and Snake Hill Road were reportedly struck by a vehicle Saturday. No injuries were reported. No further information was available from East Lampeter Township police Saturday night.

•Dylan Oberholtzer, 25, of the 200 block of North King Street, Denver, lost control of his car on a curve in the 200 block of Horseshoe Trail Road, West Cocalico Township Thursday, East Cocalico Township police said.

The vehicle struck an embankment and rolled onto its roof, according to police. No injuries were reported.

•Chris Trachte, 24, Reading, failed to stop in traffic in the 2200 block of North Reading Road and his southbound vehicle rear-ended a car driven by Phebe Merklein, 61, of New Jersey, at 4 p.m. Friday, East Cocalico Township police said.

The impact pushed Merklein's car into a car driven by Thomas Tyson, 61,  Wernersville. Merklein was treated and released from Ephrata Community Hospital, police said; Trachte was treated at the scene.

•A vehicle was reported to have overturned in the westbound lanes of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Brecknock Township at 5:26 p.m. Saturday.

Firefighters from Denver arrived to find an accident with entrapment and multiple injuries, according to county police dispatchers.

Assisting at the scene were ambulances from Fivepointville, Reamstown, New Holland, Ephrata Hospital and Western Berks Medic 650.

No further information was available Saturday night from state police.

PEDESTRIAN STRUCK:
Robert L. Bailey Sr., 47, of Honey Brook, suffered a moderate injury at 3:40 a.m. Friday when he tried to cross Route 30, near Singer Avenue in Paradise Township and was struck by a vehicle driven by Ralph W. Wilkinson, 62, of Shamokin, state police said.

HARASSMENT:
Barry Lee Floyd was charged with harassment Friday evening after a domestic incident at his home in the first block of South Singer Avenue, Paradise Township, state police said.

DUI:
Greg M. Bertoti, 32, Lancaster, was arrested for driving under the influence at 2:24 a.m. Saturday, May 9, after he was stopped for a vehicle violation in the 100 block of North Broad Street, Lititz, borough police said.

•Kyle Patrick Rodgers, 21, Lancaster, was pulled over for a stop sign violation at North Water and East Front streets, Lititz, at 1:30 a.m. Thursday and was found to be under the influence of alcohol, Lititz Borough police said. Rodgers was charged with driving under the influence, driving without a license and other related offenses, police said.

•Nolan Randall Smoker, 23, of Acorn Lane in Lititz, was arrested at 2:37 a.m. Friday for DUI at North Lane and North Cedar streets, Lititz Borough police said.

•Dennis Gutshall Jr., 28, of the 100 block of Lampeter Road, was charged with driving while intoxicated shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday, East Lampeter Township police said. Gutshall was stopped in the 1000 block of Old Philadelphia Pike for having no license plate and having his vehicle lights turned off, police said.

PUBLIC DRUNKENNESS:
Trudy J. Simpson, 54, New Holland, was found staggering and intoxicated in the middle of East Franklin Street, New Holland, at 9:25 p.m. Thursday, and was arrested for public drunkenness, New Holland police said.

UNDERAGE DRINKING:
A report of a missing juvenile led New Holland police to pursue charges of underage drinking against her and a companion Saturday.

Angela Huber, 18, of the 1400 block of Union Grove Road, East Earl, and Clair Zimmerman, 18, of the 400 block of East Farmersville Road, New Holland, were found by officers at Zimmerman's residence around 2:30 a.m., police said.

THEFTS: A Maryland woman visiting friends in the 300 block of Valley View Drive left briefly and returned at 1:55 a.m. Saturday to find her purse missing, New Holland police said. The purse contained cash, credit cards and a cell phone.

•Eden Hoke, 18, of the 100 block of Glebe Lane, and a 17-year-old Lancaster girl were charged with retail theft Friday, East Lampeter Township police said. Police accused the two of trying to take $148.89 in clothing at the Burlington Coat Factory, 2090 Lincoln Highway East, at 4:30 p.m.

•Jossie Valentin-DeVilla, 18, and Ashley Millburn, 18, both of the first block of West James Street, were charged with retail theft Friday, East Lampeter Township police said. Police accused the pair of attempting to take clothing valued at $62 from Wal-Mart, 2034 Lincoln Highway East, at 4:19 p.m.

•State police at Ephrata are investigating an identity theft case. A U.S. Airways MasterCard was opened in the name of a Manheim resident and charged $202.59 police said.

•Side windows were broken to gain access to two cars in the Misty Meadows development in Adamstown overnight Friday, East Cocalico Township police said. Stereo equipment was taken from one of the cars; nothing was stolen from the other.

BUILDING BURNED:
Samuel Martin, 54, of the 200 block of Martin Road, Earl Township, is being charged by New Holland police with violating a fire ordinance. On May 4, police said, Martin attempted to burn  an abandoned residence on his property; the structure contained shingles and building materials prohibited from being burned.

DRUG CHARGES:
Matthew M. Yates, 18, of the 100 block of Foal Court, was charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia Friday, East Lampeter Township police said. Police accused Yates of lighting a marijuana pipe behind the East Towne Mall at 6:25 p.m.

•A 17-year-old boy was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and a knife at Cocalico High School Friday at 1 p.m., East Cocalico Township police said.

I can't believe I missed a shoe sale. It's probably just as well since the number of shoes I'm allowed to have in the house has been limited. It reached the point where they needed their own room. For every pair that enters, a pair has to exit. I still haven't decided what to get rid of for the two pair I bought last week.
