The U.S. Department of Defense had no new details Sunday about the death of a Hempfield High School graduate in Iraq on Friday.

The department reported Saturday that Lance Cpl. Robert D. Ulmer, 22, formerly of Landisville, died Friday in Al Anbar province as a result of a "non-hostile" incident.

No other information about the incident was provided.

Ulmer was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, Second Marine Expeditionary Force, which is headquartered at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Attempts to reach the Marine Expeditionary Force and the Department of Defense Sunday were unsuccessful.

The department listed Ulmer's address as Landisville, but neighbors of that address on Stanley Avenue said the Ulmer family moved to Arizona last year.

Ulmer was the son of Douglas and Kim Ulmer. They could not be reached Sunday for comment.

Newspaper records indicate Ulmer and Rebecca L. Feeser of 4121 Marietta Ave., Mount Joy, applied for a marriage license at Lancaster County Courthouse last November.

Records also indicate Ulmer was a 2006 graduate of Hempfield.

He earned a certificate in RV & Outdoor Power Equipment at Lancaster County Career & Technology Center's Willow Street campus the same year.

Ulmer is at least the eighth U.S. soldier with ties to Lancaster County to die in Iraq since 2003.

These soldiers work in dangerous conditions and train in dangerous situations. God bless and comfort his family. We honor him for serving us.

You sound as if you have a naive view of how the world works, OS. Sadam should have been taken out the first time he did not comply with the conditions of surrender for Gulf War I. The UN is ineffective. Shame for using this tragedy for a local family to air your pacifist sentiments. I would suggest you choose another forum, like a Smart opinion thread or such.

Couldn't agree more; I was trying to understand where that comment fit in this situation.

God bless him, his family, and all others that not only serve but the families that are affected by their sacrifice. I can't imagine, nor do I want to have to think about losing any of my children, of which one is currently serving.
