A crash involving three vehicles on Interstate 78 in Upper Macungie Township sent a 39-year-old Lancaster man and four young passengers in his vehicle to the hospital early Friday.

State police at Fogelsville reported that a 12-year-old boy, who was traveling in a vehicle driven by Esteban Rodriguez-Reyes, of the 100 block of Garden Court, was severely injured.

Rodriguez-Reyes was driving a Mitsubishi SUV on a ramp to enter I-78 at 2:46 a.m. when he crossed over a grassy median and into the path of a tractor-trailer driven by Donald Crist, 55, of Warren, Ohio, police said.

Crist's truck struck the Mitsubishi, which spun into another tractor-trailer operated by Dale Allen Grimes, of York Springs.

Also injured in the crash were three other children, ages 17, 14 and 11. Police did not say whether the children are related to Rodriguez-Reyes.

Police said the 11-year-old passenger suffered moderate injuries while the two other passengers suffered only minor injuries.

Rodriguez-Reyes and the unidentified 12-year-old passenger remained in Lehigh Valley Hospital on Friday. The hospital said Rodriguez-Reyes was in stable condition.

Because the identity of the boy is unknown, the hospital said it could not disclose his condition.

The crash remains under investigation, police said.

2:46 A.M. HE CROSSES A GRASS MEDIAN INTO THE PATH OF A TRACTOR TRAILER, THEN INTO ANOTHER. I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE HOW THIS ONE GETS SPUN AND THE TRACTOR TRAILER DRIVERS WILL GET THE BLAME. SOMEHOW I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THE TITLE DIDN'T EVEN MENTION A TRUCK. USUALLY EVEN AN ACCIDENT INVOLVING A PICK UP TRUCK MAKES IT SOUND LIKE A BIG RIG. LIKE THE UNFORTUNATE INCIDENT IN EAST LAMPETER.
