Luis Costa of Kenilworth, N.J., was driving the rig south on the highway when he veered onto the center median for an unknown reason just before midnight, according to police.
One of the tandem trailers broke loose into the travel lanes, while the other became detached on the grass median, police said.
No passing motorists were struck by the runaway trailers, according to police.
The tractor traveled several hundred feet on the median before tipping onto its side, investigators said.
Costa was hospitalized, but police said he was able to get out of the truck on his own.
Police are investigating what caused the trucker to loose control of his rig. No charges were filed Tuesday.
Southbound lanes of Route 222 were closed for about four hours.
West Earl police were assisted by Ephrata police, Ephrata Ambulance, Ephrata Hospital's life support unit and fire personnel from West Earl and Ephrata.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about it should contact West Earl police at 859-1411.
