How about going to a mud sale?
Wait, Lancaster County's famous mud sales are in the spring, when rain muddies the grounds at local fire companies holding their annual mega auctions.
Not so fast. There are three mud sales this summer. Maybe we should call them dirt sales, or dust sales.
Anyway, two are held this week.
The Bird-in-Hand sale, otherwise known as the 10th annual Lancaster County Carriage and Antique Auction, is Friday, starting at 8 a.m.
It will be held for the second year at 2747 Old Philadelphia Pike (Route 340) across from Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant.
"It's a new thing for us," said Kendall Shrock of the fire company. "It was a for-profit carriage sale. The last two years, it's become a mud sale."
All types of new and used carriages from antique to high-end — typically as many as 125 or more — will be sold to benefit the Bird-in-Hand Fire Company, just down the road from the sale site.
Antiques, harness and tack, specialty items, quilts, crafts, buggies and wagons will also go on the auction block.
For the first time, there will be a miniature horse and pony auction in conjunction with the carriage sale.
"We like having the sale in June because it doesn't clash with the other mud sales," Shrock said, "but there may not be any mud."
On Saturday, the 13th annual Refton Community Fire Company Auction will get under way at 8:30 a.m. at the fire company grounds at 99 Church St., Refton, just off Route 222.
On the sale bill bidders will see hardware, shop tools, plants, home and lawn furniture, antiques, crafts, hay and straw, quilts, horses, lawnmowers, storage sheds, farm equipment, buggies and carriages.
Then, at the end of summer, the fourth annual Kinzers Fire Company Mud Sale is set for 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22, at 3521 Lincoln Highway East, Kinzers.
Plants, groceries, antiques, furniture, lumber, tack, sheds and gazebos, equipment, buggies, quilts and horses will be auctioned.
Elmer Stoltzfus, the sale's manager, said sale proceeds have risen every year, and topped $14,000 last year.
A few other fire companies, which have mud sales in the spring, also have fall sales.
Gordonville Fire Company holds a building materials auction in September.
In October, Strasburg Fire Company has a quilt sale and Robert Fulton Fire Company holds a second mud sale.
