A 5-year-old girl was critically injured this morning after officials said she was struck by a tractor-trailer truck in East Earl Township.

The child, identified as Michelle Hurst, was flown by helicopter to Hershey Medical Center, according to a television news report.

The accident happened around 9:30 a.m. in the 1100 block of Lancaster Avenue, just outside Terre Hill, according to emergency dispatchers.

According to a relative of the child who spoke with WGAL-TV, the girl was riding her bicycle with her mother, Maryann Hurst, who was also riding a bicycle that was pulling a carrier containing her two young sons.

I am so glad I don't believe in a selfish god that "takes" or steals children from families and goes around doing so in such a horrific manner. If God needs another angel, I think He knows how to create another one; He doesn't need to take a child from a family for His own use. Maybe that's something people say to try to make horrible things make sense, but to me it gives God a bad rap.

People say that all the time. I think its more to 'comfort' themselves and their families cuz they can't possibly believe at once that something so tragic and horrible would happen to someone so innocent. To make their young child's life 'meaningful' in a more 'divine' sense they have to grasp some aspect of "God needing the child more".

There certainly is no rhyme or reason in this world.

We're suposed to 'leave it up to God' but when the moments arrive are expected also to 'use our brains' (but NOT question God). Don't forget..the Lord works in "mysterious ways".

I guess I just believe in "time and unforeseen occurrence than God taking a child because He needs it. Oh, well.

Sad situation, no doubt about that.

That's interesting. The article on LOL this morning stated that the little girl turned into the rear axle of the truck...hmmmm....I wonder which is it? In any event, praying that this child makes it and heals quickly.

I saw that article, too. Odd that the reports are so vastly different.

The truck was passing the family on a curve. He had crossed the SOLID center line on a almost blind curve. I guess he thought he could save 30 seconds by crossing the center line and passing on a curve. Well he didn't save anytime now did he. He probably never got to his destination, but he did put a 5 year old girl in the hospital.
Anyone who travels in this part of the county knows that the roads are used extensively by bikes and horse and buggy's, this is the plain folk's only mode of transportation.

Hmmmm, after reading todays story, seems like the truck crossed the double yellow line on a blind curve for a reason,to get away from the bike going north on the south bound shoulder, maybe if this little girls mother would have been riding in the north bound lane like the laws states, she wouldn't be in the hospital now........Hmmmm whos at fault now and who are you going to point your finger at today?

Tragic accident for anyone to be involved in but even more so when you hear it was someone so young!

Never mind fault for now, thoughts and prays should goto everyone involved especially the little girl and her family, I can only imagine what her mother feels right now.....she witnessed it and lets not forget the truck driver (imagine what is going through his mind and his family minds) accidents happen, thats why they are called accidents!

We see bikes on the roadways every day and sometimes don't think twice about them until this happens. I have seen riders taking up the whole lane where you almost need to slam on brakes or swerve into oncoming lane to avoid them (and alot of the time the cyclists won't move over). I have also seen cyclists riding as far off the road as possible and aggressive motorists flying out around them as though the riders are in tanks and can't be hurt. I always give cyclists the right of way and always pass them cautiously (one touch of your bumper can kill them)!

Riding bikes is very dangerous especially on roadways heavily traveled by big trucks and cars for that matter! The problem is compounded by big trucks because of the lack of stopping power and maneuverability! Throw into the mix a possible blind or sharp curve and it makes it almost unavoidable (especially in a big truck)!

I'm not pointing fingers to either party because this was a tragic accident with that said don't judge the driver without all the facts. Remeber he knows he hit a little girl and it must be tearing him up inside. The little girls mother is also going through hell right now!

Very sad and tragic story on both sides!!

Thoughts and prayers to all involved!
